FXWARS! SUPERPOWERS!: David Schoneveld, Daniel Sunwoo + Team (The Brute)

#1

Ok, I’m/We’re in, I was planning on doing my own shot but then as I went back over the story boards I really liked “The Brute” by eliseu gouveia. It’s posted in the concept area and others are free to do the same of course. After we shoot it, I’d like to release the footage to others who want to do the same, I haven’t thought of it too hard so I’ll let you guys know. I’m going to use the footage for the next gnomon fx dvd’s I’m planning in the examples, and include the footage too. So we’ll see. It’ll be HD so also quite large for all the files. Since each shot is multiple HD plates.

Ok so I’ve taken on a teammate already, Daniel Sanwoo, a lead compositor here @ Luma who is also good with camera and such. Also good b/c we’re going to shoot textures of the whole area with the same lighting and everything so we can build it even better in 3d.

I’ll probably play the one character with the flame hands, Ha! It should be fun. I’m getting Gnomon to help me out a bit, and I’ll probably shoot it there, at the gnomon school. It’s easier with film rights and such to film in places you know the owners.

Rough plan so far is preproduction and shoot on the week after the 4th. I’m going to go over there to shoot some digital stills this weekend after the gnomon live event, and try to get some specific locations for the shoot. There is a possibility of another location but for now I’m happy with this one.

Ok and just a repost of the story boards…

#2

this one seems to be a pretty good concept, looking forward to the finished project.

#3

Good luck! I like the concept you chose, has the potential to be spectacular.

#4

thanks guys! So I’ve talked with a producer at gnomon who I think is going to help, and Gnomon has a crane for the one shot with the monsters fist. I’ve recruited a friend to Direct the shoot and possibly edit it. The reason I’m having someone else direct the shoot is b/c I want the best acting possible and if the lines aren’t delived just right this won’t sell. He’s really meticulious and gets that. He also had some great points about the edit, story telling, and some camra angles.
I’m thinking of shooting it for a 1 minute version and a 30ish second version for the fxwars. the longer version will probably not have fx in it, be more for story telling. So, What else? I went to the (most likely) shoot location and checked it out, I was going to shoot digital stills but my wife had the camera.
I’ve been doing test explosions for the initial blast, since it didn’t have to be developed with the footage. For that matter I can get all the fx going w/o the footage I suppose. I’ll post something maybe tonight. I’m really excited about doing this, it’s going to be freakin’ fun!

#5

Wow I cant wait, sounds like it’s going to be amazing, I mean look what you accomplished on your last FX wars:)

#6

here’s one of my first passes at the initial explosion

http://agentfx.com/fxWars/birthExplosion_A02.mov

I’ve got a lot of ideas on what to make it better but I like to update people with where I’m at.

#7

I know its early, but just some quick feedback on the explosion…maybe make it a bit quicker so its more fierce and brighter in the middle

#8

Thanks BTW, good comments. I think esp the brighter in the middle, quicker of course too, that’s going to be determined more by the scale once I see the shot. Thanks

#9

I’m going to use the footage for the next gnomon fx dvd’s I’m planning in the examples, and include the footage too.

I am going to buy that DVD. Your the one who made the Fluid dvds also right? They were really nice. Thanks a lot to you and the other people at Gnomon.

And best of luck, but with a team like that you might not need it XD

#10

Thanks Ole!

So I tried to get the shoot for THIS saturday the 8th but with the 4th and such I thinkn I’ll need to push it to the 15th, delaying my original plan by a week, argh. I’m already thinking that more time would be great! I feel like 2 months once I shoot it would be ok. Now I’ll be down to 1.75 months.

I’ve been meeting with the director of the shoot, my friend Matt. Did I mention him yet? Well He’s going to direct it, I’ll just direct what needs to be done for the fx, he’ll focus on the story and acting.

Oh and I’m going to post at least some shoots and seq for other teams to use once I get the footage. Sorry for the delay I really am trying to get this done right. It just takes a lot more than a camera to do it  Ok well as usual I’ll keep you guys up to date on the progress.

This is an FYI for all teams:

#12

A really great start, I am most eager to see the end result.

#13

looks quite good actually, nice work
I think its bright enough, no need for more
tell me, is it made of sprites? just a bit curious on how you made it if you don’t mind, sure looks good

#14

lv-88 no I used fluids, 2 containers, one dynamic one just an animated texture, like the puff ball or fireball example.

So for the rest of you… I thought I’ll post my setUp file for the one shot I think it the best fx shot “playBall”. I was thinking that in a studio you probably wouldn’t have to model and rig and set up an arm. It’s placed for one frame, but not tracked in yet. I think it’s frame 129 the range slider starts there. basically all you’ll have to do it put the still frame as your image plane and start doing tests. If someone takes the time to track it in, please share it. I’ll do it, otherwise. Anyway, this is step one, one frame just start getting a good look, rough comps etc.

Might want to make the arms unrenderable 'n such. Have fun, once you start testing on that you’ll be ahead of me  (unles you don’t start until later this week/tonight maybe)
Maya 7 file:

enjoy, I look forward to links and tests you guys do, I’ll have some up soon too.

edit: for those who don’t know the footage for this team is available for all, the links are on the videographers thread in fxwars.
Also I made my files for in maya quite a bit smaller so I can work faster, I think I’m useing something like 480x262 or something like that, trying to remember off the top of my head.

#15

Hi Dave & Daniel team!, here I tracked your scene. Maybe need some fixes, today I start with some Vfx Test, if I adjust the tracking I will post a new version.

yeah, soon, I’ve/we’ve been busy finishing the Covenant

http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony_pictures/thecovenant/

My fx are in the final battle seq and if you see it the “leveling up” as I think of it, of one of the main characters, altho none are in this trailer. So we’re basically done and I’ll now have time to get some tests up online. I know it’s not been very busy on the forums but my team is ready to go, this week should have some reaally cool tests, hopefully sparking some compedativeness. We already have to beat Dan, who’s stuff is looking quite cool already!

#19

Thanks for that Dave, thanks for the tips you gave me that helps me a lot to get cooler Fx, now Im working to fix more my shot.

Good Luck to you guys, I wan to see your Test Shots

I’m still on overtime, past deadline, but somehow we’re not the ones who are holding back the show… whatever so a few more days of that.

No excuses, I’ll have something cooler going soon enough I’ve been geting some great ideas of fx to add. This is just to wet your appetites and get the ball rolling. Today was a great day, learned/figured out a super cool effect that is totally going into the next DVD and this short! I’m really excited about it!
