FXWars SuperPower!: Stark Raving Mad (team)

#1

Ok we are in—our concept is most of the way finished.
We will be doing a short sequence and using the Electricity based power.

The final sequence (updated links as some people were having issues with the encoding):
High Bandwidth, 34MB, Sorenson3
High Bandwidth, 21MB, H264
Low Bandwidth, 4MB, H264

Our Team:
Velk—Director
bobcat1804—Director Photography

Concept:
Electrigirl—can absorb electricity from power sources around her and store it for future use. Gathering power is totally passive on her part, but the discharging of it is controlled.

#3

Sounds like a cool idea. There’s a lot you can do with that.

Here are our working boards for our shots.

Location and Compositing Tests
Scouted locations for our overhead parking lot shot and came up with a great location. Ran a really quick comp test to see what it might look like at dusk.

#6

Pre Pro Status
1 major and 1 minor role still need to be cast.

Tentative shooting date and backup rain date set for July 15 and 16, still need permission for one of the locations on those dates.

Dialog needs polished on the script, and the shot list needs finished.

Hi guys! I really like your superpowerconcept - the whole idea of electricity and so! Very cool and original idea, and I’m sure you can make it look very convincing (as long as you don’t use the default-lighting effect in After Effects or so  ). Also it’s really good to see you plan the shoot so professional, by even location scouting and so!

All the best on the photography days! I’ll be looking forward for some cool results! :bounce:

Production Update
Last night my friend Jared and I made a rough steady cam rig for our follow shot—not a perfect solution but with some additional software stabilization it will look pretty smooth.

Velk,

Good to see a picture of you, and good luck with your entry!

Cheers,

great and bold idea to come up with your own steadycam system, man!

or, to put it in a nutshell: “Velk, you’re a ****in Edison!”

subscribed, btw…

Rebeccak Thanks for all your support and encouragement!

Mu, what is the quote? Necessity is the mother of imitation?
I got the idea from several sites talking about the possibility of doing this, though everyone else was talking about using aluminum piping. I’ll have to credit my friend with the PVC pipe idea. Though now I know why everyone else seems to use aluminum, this thing is very heavy.

Production
Our shoot is complete. We filmed everything in 3 hours (including setup and tear-down).

Special thanks to our cast and crew who all did a fantastic job. You Rock!

Much too tired to post any footage tonight but we will have it and some production stills up in a day or so. Here is one photo just for kicks.

Ok here are some roughs from yesterdays shoot. I just grabbed one of each scene. The entire shoot was about 25 minutes of footage which is too much to place online. These will give you a taste at lease of what is going on.

Live Action Rough 2.5 minutes, 5.4 MB, QT 7 H.264

Wow guys! Amazing stuff! It’s so good to see that you’re really living for this challenge (at least, you’re so motivated that it seems to be so! Reminds me of the good old days that we were shooting our ‘Big Freeze’-footage - one year back :buttrock: )! Impressive that you had such a big crew together for the shoot!

The acting is really good, in my opinion! With some VFX-enhancing this will become a masterpiece!

The shot I really love, is where you first close-up on the guy with the iPod, to later follow the girl! Very nice cinematography and quit a steady move! With some extra digital stabilizing it will be outstanding!

How much of your guys are going to do the post production? And on what resolution are you going to work (did you have an HD-cam?).

I’m looking forward so much for the final product! All the best on the post-prod & Enjoy your day!

Dutchman
Thanks for taking a look, I’m happy that you enjoyed it!

Unfortunately we didn’t have an HD cam, we were shooting with a borrowed Canon XL1 (which is a great camera). Because of that we are doing everything in DV.

We have 4 people working on post-production work; 2 are working on the FX and compositing work, 1 working on a sound track, and 1 doing graphics work for the credits and DVD cover.

Hiya Velk,

Looking good! Haha, I will forever have lines from these takes running through my head…

Well, I guess that beats Shakira.

Cheers,

same here, somehow that struck me as especially catching.

I am so looking forward to what you are going to do with these shots. Please post as many WIPs as possible…

Mu
We will be posting as many WIPs as we can. We have two pretty big challenges in the compositing department. First is the electricity under her hand, second is the iPod screen. We are building and animating the iPod screen, which we will have to track and add glossiness without breaking the flow and believability of the shot. Not too worried about the other lighting effects that we are doing, those will be hard but not nearly on the same level.

Rebeccak
I seriously didn’t consider the implication of the lines double entendre till we were shooting, and hearing a late arriving crew member comment “what kinda movie is this…? Bow chick-a-chick-a bow bow.”
