WIP THREAD: wip thread
DESCRIPTION: Well, i decided to enter the competition really really really late… 3 days before the due date  , i thought it would be a cool exercise to do, besides… i wanted to play with Maya 2011 new fluid options.
I used Maya fluids with n-particles for the simulation.
the n-particles create the fuel motion the nparticles become an emitter for the fluid container.
TIME-FRAME: i started to work on this project on Friday Aug 6 2010, at like 2 pm.
by 11 pm i had tried different approaches for the simulation.
so the first part "Research"took 9 hours.

got back to working on the project on Saturday at 8 pm and was up until 8:30 am on Sunday, i stopped only because i sent the render that i am submitting now.
so the second part “look development” took 12 hours.

the render was not meant to be a final, it was just a test. and the render crashed on me this morning. at 10 am.
i did not have time to work on the project today (Monday), so… i just made a quick comp in after effects and am submitting this file.
so the final part “rendering” took 22 hours.

the total man hours for this project were 21 and 22 rendering hours.
first frames took 10 mins a frame, by frame 100 it was taking 20 mins a frame. at low resolution with low quality setting with Maya software.

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE
machine : laptop vaio
processor: intel i7 1.6gz

DESCRIPTION: Two soldiers fight a giant beast within the ruins of a city. Inspired by Sergey Kolesov's painting entitled ["Old Terence's War"](http://www.peleng.byethost12.com/Finished_Old_Terence%27s_War.html) (creature design used with permission).
Primary modeling, rigging, texturing, animation, lighting, rendering, comping by me.

The following additional models were downloaded from Turbosquid:

       -Gas mask (ditodito designs)
       -Army clothing (Sirda)
       -M1 Garand (Jonfletc)
       -Tank (ES3DStudios)

Smoke/Dust plates from [Action Essentials 2](http://www.videocopilot.net/products/action2/).

       Flamethrower sim created with FumeFX.

Rendered with a mix of Scanline/MR/Vray.

The project was completed over a period of 3 intense weekends. My work schedule was very busy over the past month so I was not able to work on the project during the week.

Originally I wanted to do some kind of battle between humans and monsters, and when I saw Sergey's painting I was immediately inspired to pursue a similar monster design.

After creating the monster, I designed the characters and the main environment. Once those elements were completed, I rigged the characters and monster, and began planning the shot layouts. I didn't storyboard or anything ahead of time, I just planned out the shots in my head. Once I had a rough idea for how I wanted the scenes staged, I brought the rigs into the environment file and started animating.

Several progress videos were posted in my WIP thread showing my animation progression. One thing I wanted to achieve in the animation was giving the monster a real sense of size and weight...but I didn't want it to be totally immobile so I ended up with a mix of slow, heavy motions combined with faster movements once it is attacked.

After all 7 shots were animated, I then proceeded to the rendering stage. I used [LPM](http://lukashi.com/LPM.php) to manage all the render passes. Also, up until this point, I hadn't tested any flamethrower simulations. Due to the short amount of time I had to render and comp all the shots (basically, this weekend is when I started rendering), I did flamethrower tests while I was waiting for my renders to finish. Once I achieved the look I wanted, I used pflow to spray particles out of the flamethrower and onto the monster. The pflow events were designed so that some of the fire particles that collided with the monster would stick to it for a short period of time, giving the effect of the creature slightly catching on fire. The fumefx fire sims for each shot ended up taking about 1 hour each.

All the shots were comped in After Effects.

Sound Effects were mixed in Sony Vegas.
Good luck to everyone else who participated in the challenge....it was fun seeing what other people came up with!
