FXWars! DISINTEGRATION!: basti, blade 3

#1

hey,

i’m really busy with jobs at the moment but i always wanted to do something like this.
so here’s my first try:
link to the animation

hopefully i’ll find the time to work on the shot again and maybe add it to some real life footage.

Looks great so far. Is it possible to make the disintegration happen from the middle of the body though?

What software are you using in this effect?

#3

thanks

yes it’s possible as the effect is based on an animated gradient mask.
i have to watch some blade 3 references because now i did it completely
from my memory. but this was more of a r&d test for the disintegration
technique.

pixellusion is a cinema 4d studio so this is the software i’m using to create
the effect.
particles are thinking particles and rendering is done with stormtracer which
is a plugin compareable to krakatoa. (rendering up to 10 mio particles per
gig of ram)

the compositing was done in aftereffects. i rendered passes for fire, ashes,
smoke, sparks and shadows

alittle update:

disintegrate_wip_005

now the disintegration starts from the middle of the body.
i’m already pretty happy with the setup so the next step
will be the combination with life action footage

Hi basti
Wonderful work, i love it  thanks tor sharing!

The effect is very cool so fire, especially the fire in the last animation, but I think the ashes could be a lot better. I can see you used a ton of particles for them but they look more like an animated cloth made of little particles. You’d have to change that and play with other effects and see how you can make it nicer. It’s as if the ashes are particles stacked up in rows. They’d probably have to be a little more randomly placed.

#7

thanks for your comments.

the visible rows in the ashes is caused by the missing subframe sampling.
it will be fixed when rendering with motionblur.

here’s a small update - well actually a big one  as it’s the combination with life action:
(keep in mind it’s only a rough test comp)

animation will be final & online tomorrow.

looks awesome, can’t wait for the final animation

#9

here’s the final shot:
animation (4mb)

my plan was to do a cool timewarp with a silver bullet coming from the camera
to my chest -> going back to normal speed and -> disintegrate
i didn’t find the time to render with motionblur so there are still some steps in
the particles. and there are some compositing errors in it like the shadow on
the wall, no reflection on the ground etc…

but sadly i was and am too busy to create it … although it would only take some
more hours of comp work. the bullet itself is already rendered… maybe i can squeeze
the update into the deadline but now i have to leave and supervise some on set stuff

hope you like it!

#10

looking good!

i like the thick ash you have going, too bad you didn’t have the time to motionblur it.

#11

Hi! Your entry is looking really nice so one question more

How is the fire part done? is there somekind of facing particles with
fire texture or just glowing particles with motion blur?

thanks

#12

thanks,

the fire is rendered whith stormtracer so the
particles are little sprites facing the camera.

a fire texture is not neccesary because the
particles are smaller than 1 pixel.

Congratz!

#14

out of subject, the effect you did with the minibus in your website, http://www.pixellusion.de/

…was that done in c4d or did you use something like syflex or maya cloth? do youy have a tutorial for that one? I love it!
