I’m working on a collapsing bridge scene. It’s vaguely inspired by the “War of the Worlds” bridge destruction.
I’m just building my models now.

Thank you!
Here is a first test.
I’ll proceed with the main choreography, then I’ll add some particle FX.
[b]I’m near to define the final choreography of the shot.
Any comment is welcome.

Hey Lino. This seems good. I would like to see a rendered shot as next step.
Waiting for updates.
Bye bye
[b]I decided to go for a kind of dynamics more near to the bridge destruction shot of War of the worlds.
This is a test showing how one of the main block of the bridge gets collapsed…

[b]I’m near defining the final scene.
Probably I’ll add another structure collapsing at the beginning of the shot.
Then I’ll add some cars, some dust and smoke, and the explosions…and, of course, a turbulent sky in the background…

[b]I added a structure.
The camera movement is still in “beta”.

Sorry to bother you, but I was always interested in those destruction and collapsing scene.
How do you proceed? Do you actually build a bridge and then cut some smaller pieces? Is this done randomly through some kind of modifier?
Also, for the explosion, is it animated by hand?
No problem!
Exactly. The model is a very simplified one, and is pre-broken using a plugin.
Half by hand and half using hard body-dynamics.
I have several hand animated “effectors” colliding with the various bridge parts, the rest is done by Lightwave dynamics. Of course, I have animated some forces too.
If you have other questions, I’ll be glad to answer.
However, what do you think about the shot at his present state?
Thank you.
Hey!
Thanks for the reply! Are you using a standard Lightwave plugin? Is this something comon for every other app out there, such as XSI or 3DS?
As for the shot, it’s pretty awesome right now. The only parts that’s bugging me are from F78. The last section or part of the bridge is still too dense. IMO, the extreme of the section should collapse first, or at least way more overlap in those part. I don’t necessarely understand all the forces behind those kind of thigns, but that’s only my outsider point of view. But, I mean, it’s alright as it is.
Good work!
looks great! but the early part of the collapse caught my eye, when the first bit of the bridge starts collapsing, the shattered bits blast away like it was hit by something really explosive and they get flung out. i don’t remember this scene, but was it like this in the movie? it seems a bit wierd now to see them flying out without any external forces. Maybe you just haven’t added in the other extra bits yet? heheh, anyway just my 2cents.
Yes, all standard and free plugins. I’ve used CrackIT! (a free Lightwave Modeler Plugin) to break the main objects, and standard Lightwave dynamics to get everything “exploding”.
Thank you for your advices! I really hope to have the time to correct the dynamic behavior of the last part.
In the movie the bridge gets shoot by lasers and missiles. However I still have to add some more debris, particle smoke, cars. There’s a lot of work still to be done, I hope the final result is going to be fine.
Thank you!
very nice animation! with cars, particles and a good animation will be fantastic! I love how the bridge craks, there is any plugin similar to this one for 3ds? I know one but doesn’t have this effects.
good work!
Thank you!
I don’t know about a 3ds plugin that breaks things…maybe some 3dsmax expert can help about it.
