FXWars! BIG Freeze!: lv_88, (Frozen City/Environment)

#21

thx

here comes the main building freeze test:
It’s only the main cube that freezeing down, the other building parts are still getting their texture created, but I have alot of work left here, completely new texture, snow intensity work, bump maps etc. so this is one hell of a beta test

Looks very good:)

#23

This is looking really nice! I love to see Kaknästornet getting freezed, hehe. Keep it up man!

#24

I’m jumping back and forward on different scenes, damn this is hard, I’ve got alot of work here somewhat finished hehe, I need to spend more times finish one piece at the time

Smaller update on a completely different scene, will be “after” the freeze, yet even this scene is about 40%-50% complete hehe

http://hem.bredband.net/lv_08/weather_kaos_test01.mov

The video is really rendered on “low” settings/resolution, and some artifcats apear when converting fast to another movie format so don’t worry about that

and more terrains are comming to the scene, aswell as other details to make a richer scene

#25

Cool shot, I like the colors in particular. Maybe the animatio is a bit too CG, the movements are a bit too clean. I would use a fixed camera there and let the wind, snow and other weather do the job. But we all got different styles.

Peace
/M

#26

thx, I did actually plan on using another camera later on, something with less movement and little snow aswell to show the “calmness” after the freeze down. I’ll see how it progresses, nomather what the final version is, it sure is going to go through one hell of a adjustments (color, contrast etc.) since the 3d softwares don’t usually give me good images anyway.

Will post updates as soon as I get time

#27

If I could make an observation about your freezing technique. It looks like the effect is tiled exactly the same for each side of the building. If it were me, I would render out the effect on a large rectangular plane, then apply the rendered sequence using cylindrical UVW’s. That would stop the tiling and give you a more organic look.

If you were going to do that eventually anyway, just ignore my post, and Ill go back to being quiet.

Good job so far though!

#28

hehe it’s ok, I’ll probobly survive

Yes I’ve been thinking about that, and I’ll see how far I can go, the time is really not on my side now, but if I have to make it fast, well, I’m going to make it all look great through some effects in a compositing app so we’ll bassicly see

#29

Forget about this, I have to finish this projekt

#30

Well, I’m back again, I just have to finish this project or else I’ll feel bad about myself

here goes another update:
trying to finish off the scenes I’m working, have to do a couple more, and in all this kaos I finally found two friends who could help me shoot a couple of outdoor scenes in sthlm

Main stockholm matte together with snow *reworked (live video):

Second Stockholm-snow scene: (live video together with particle snow)
I still have to do some serious color/contrast adjusting here

Kaknäs-tower scene update:
On the Kaknästorn-scene I’ve made a camera-motion change, made it go from up to down instead of going around the building as the first video and it seems to work alot better, more objects have been added to the scene aswell as the Kaknäs sign on the last image

I will post videos soon since I’ll have to let the computer render out this scen aswell as the others throughout one school day

And about the color, it’s just some small color correction, in the final version everything will blend in nicely together

What do you all think so far?

#31

Here’s one of the final versions of the kaknas-scene:

  • The sky has been replaced with a more suitable one, looks better now doesn’t it?
  • Small adjustments on the building/houses surounding the tower, seems as if I have to detail them a bit more, but that won’t be a problem

EDIT: here goes another image (the color/contrast here is slightly too strong, at least on the blue one, that will be adjusted later on)

Does it look better now?
Something else you think I should add to the scene?
Comments are always welcome

#32

hey guys, I’ve finished, or tried finishing it, the results wasn’t quite as I expected (I removed the sound due to so issues when editing, so the movie doesn’t have any sound now), at least now I know how difficult and time consuming this was, so I’ve learned my lesson this time, hopefully someone will like something here

Hey lv_88,

Great job on getting your entry together! I know you had some doubts about finishing but it was good to see you pulled through in the end.

Overall…a solid piece! The snow effect in the foreground helped aid the atmosphere a lot…and some of your matte paintings were GREAT (ie…the first one  ). The freezing effect on the last building (the tower) was also pretty cool

As a critique though, some of the things looked out of a place a bit…even though you did an AWESOME job painting snow over the buildings in the main long-shot of the cityscape…the clouds overhead seem a little out of place.

Either way though…a fun entry nonetheless!

hehe thx, really nice to hear! =)

yes, I had to put it together somehow, and that without even any backup plans whatsoever so it ended quite a bit as I didn’t intended it to be, next time I’ll have to make sure I have more time, going to school isn’t that fun these days, and lately it’s been so much work, I’m glad that I at least had something in the end

I see you also noticed the clouds, and I agree completely there with you, I had another skydome but I never edited it due to time itself

Wish you all good luck again and hopefully we’ll meet again, on a challenge hehe :stuck_out_tongue:
