FXWars! BIG Freeze!: lv_88, (Frozen City/Environment)

#1

Hey! I’ll see how far I can go with this, so much todo, so little time, but hopefully I’ll have time todo much more

05-09-26
So it ends at last, I’ve finished it (at least I thinks it’s finished :P)
So the results of using Photoshop, Maya, Premiere and vue can be seen on page 3 of this thread or go to the official final entry thread, good luck everyone

So far I’m doing some tests/images to see were I want to go:

Your comments are welcome

looking good, I really like the clouds and atmosphere.

#3

hey that looks superb! (best mattepainting entry i’ve seen so far  )

good luck!

#4

thx alot! Here comes a small animation/blizzard test

EDIT: Removed due to the busy/slow host, will update with new link soon

#5

The matte painting is really nice. Only thing that is still looking a little bit strange imo, is the area between the clouds and the city.

#6

thx

Yes, I know about the clouds/city area, it’s not yet the final output, I’ll work more with everything, that includes the haze between the city and the clouds, plus I’ll see if I want another sky aswell, will play around a bit

anyone have any comments on the animation/movie? the movie will also be going through some changes soon

#7

The animations fileszie is a little to big. It is downloading with 2,3 KB´s. Could you maybe make a little smaller sample?

#8

The snow in the animation looks very good except it does not look like a blizzard, it looks more like a peaceful snow shower. Maybe if you increase the speed and turbulance of the snow you will achieve a more blizzard like effect if that’s what you are shooting for.

#9

yes, that will be fixed as soon as I get home, I’ll upload the movie to my own isp host so it will be really fast, stay tuned

And about the falling snow, I know that it’s calm, I have yet to try with an turbulent blizzard, will play with that aswell when I get home

updates comming soon
EDIT: Now how come I didn’t even mentioned that I’m going to freeze Stockholm down? hehe

Here the test animation on a new and fast server:

comments would be nice although I’ll be making some changes soon

Crap. Another great entry. I’m double dead now

Ok some crits, but I’m just making your entry harder to beat!

I don’t like the way the snow starts into the animation. It looks like it’s only snowing in the foreground. The angle the snow is falling at doesn’t match the perspective of the shot. It should be falling into the scene, and not towards the camera.

Your fog line in the distance of the city doesn’t seem to match well with the fog line on the horizon with the clouds. You can see a seam across the top of the city where the city ends and the clouds start.

You need something else happening in the background. For example; Try having your clouds slowly drifting to the left to give the scene some depth, and performance.

If you feel like you can handle it, then add some sun beams drifting across the city. (keep it simple).

#12

thx alot, really nice to hear

I know about some of the issues and I’ve fixed some already, but the one thing I’ll give some time is the damn snow which I’ll try to create in maya and the composite so I get the movement I need and not just infront of the camera as you said

I’m also going to start shot another scene with the camera tomorrow hopefully, the idea is to film the sky and the pan downwards to the ground, in the middle a leaf/drop will fall which will evetually freeze, so I’ll get started soon and post when I get time

#13

Ok, I´ve seen it now.

The overall particle flow is looking good far, but as mustan9 mentioned, it doesn´t fit in the current perspective now.

#14

here comes a small animation test again with the snow, I did it quite fast so I’ll tweak it tomorrow, I have a few emitter and I’ll place them on the sides aswell so it’s not so flat

Any better? Placed an emitter to blow infront of cam

#15

That looks a lot better. I like the motion of the snow.

Crits: I wonder with a camera focusing at that distance if it would see snow that close. The snow you have in the background looks more real, but the fast moving snow up close should be much more out of focus.

Crits: Maybe this is part of your storyboard, but it really looks fake when the snow is starting to form. Once it’s a full blown snow fall it’s ok, but maybe you should just have it completely snowing from the first frame.

Now if I could only find some time to work on my entry

#16

thx

that’s without much motionblur, which will be added aswell, just didn’t have time in the beginning, and about the snow forming up, that just the emitters “emitting” particles, I will exclude that from the final movie, it will be fully snowy all the time so don’t worry

hehe, would be nice to work with someone but my time doesn’t allow me todo all tomuch right now so I’ll do my best to make sure I make it till the end

#17

well, here’s an small freeze down test on a simple cube:

#18

First of all, that mattepainting is really cool! Looks very interesting!

That looks really, really cool! :scream: Could you tell me/ur something about the techniques you used…? Is it a growing selection…? Is it procedural, or 2D-animated in another app?

Good luck! I’m looking forward to more!

#19

thx alot

I made the growing freeze in ParticleIllusion3, an snow emitter moving downwards bassicly on a black background, that was rendered to *.tga image sequences, then in maya I bassicly added it to the color channel in the cube material and told it that it was an sequence and viola, easy and in fully 3D

Will tweak it a bit more, made it in 4 mins so I’ll have to give it some time

EDIT: Here’s the stockholm tv tower I’ll be freezing down (Kaknästornet)
Still un-textured, will just finish some detailing left and the I’ll do the freeze down

#20

good technic! i wonder how the hell i would do that in blender, metaballs crearly isn’t enaugh i’ll try some particle stuff than… :hmm:
