FumeFX smoke "poof"

I’m trying to create a sort of “poof!” effect that would happen if something really dusty were dropped or, more specifically, if something inside of the object is pushing outward. I’ve been trying it with fumefx emulating from a spherical object but it’s just not getting there at all.
I’m wondering what would be a good way to make a fast push of light smoke that quickly dissipates.
