Frustration about Art judgement

#121

So many times we over complicate things, and imho that’s the case in CGS’s Gallery. Work that is rejected should be REEEAAALLLYYY low in quality, like, obviously BAAAAD, so bad it’s beyond a simple comment or a constructive crit, not ready for other people to see, the kind of work that no one would start a thread like this over, AND more so, get so many people arguing over the validity of rejection. As soon as that happens any Mod should see and admit he’s wrong. CGS Gallery use to be a beautiful place back in time, u could hardly see a thread like this, now one pops every month…
So why can’t we just keep it simple!? please!
much love,
M

Yes. Because one complaint in a month out of the literally hundreds of rejected images means the entire system is deeply flawed and should be changed, right? I’m not saying the system is perfect, but honestly it astounds me how people will point fingers of blame in every direction instead of considering that maybe their work isn’t that great. If you want to look at mediocre work, then go to deviantart.

anyway…

The problem of mankind in such a many disciplines and areas. You look up to someone or something, you hone your skills and knowledge trying to aim for what your idols do. Some people go past their idols, boxers cry when they have won their youth idols, hockey players, artists, authors, writers, you name it. There will be always bigger fish, there will always be those who simply are not yet ready or can never be as creative as their idols. Yet we have twisted expectations and perception of ourself. Some more distorted than others.

Now, combine this setting with the eager to be recognized. All the respect and admiration the champions get on any sports, how much money some of the best artists make or how much worldwide recognition they get. There is always tendency for people to want get the same. unfortunately in reality there are no shortcuts. What happens to the CGS gallery when everyone can get their picture there? Inflation. What happens to olympic medal if everyone gets one? Inflation.

No matter that the subject is, there will be people who feel they should be recognized. Its quite complicated looking mechanisms between the psychological needs and how our minds work on our society. But one thing is for sure, as soon as inflation happens the system destroys itself on artificial entropy of what one admires. it can only survive when there are certain, preferably small portion that pushes the behaviour out of the safe zone. Some can push too much, and may not be understood at first. For some artists it may take lifetime or 2 for their work to be understood. Usually in such phenomena like CGS gallery the signal disturbance from exceptional people is adequate to keep the system pushing forward in terms of quality and creativity.

Maybe some take this as pure rambling but…

Cromfel i like you style!

hi Leigh, your reason would stand if no mediocre work could be found in CGS Gallery. Can u honestly say that’s the case? maybe, but really, i think not. Why not just save the CG Award Gallery for excellent, non-mediocre, work? I don’t know, that make’s sense to me…
I use to come to CGS Gallery to see nice art, mediocre art can also inspire and give pleasure to the viewer, i came to get comments and crit’s on my work, i came for so many things, just one of them being great art that would occasionly appear and stand out of the pack…
much love,
M

I don’t know if there’s any mediocre work in there because I only look at the validation queue, not the gallery itself. Maybe there is, maybe there isn’t. But I’m certainly not in favour of what you suggest, where we accept anything and everything provided it isn’t awful. It would be like going to a museum where they’ve loaded it full of random shit and there’s only a few interesting things to see - why would anyone want that? Or imagine a contest where everyone won a prize instead of just the best entries - what would be the point in that? Previous discussions on this topic have demonstrated overwhelmingly that the majority of visitors to this site are in favour of high standards in the gallery; where we draw that line is a tricky task but the point is that the majority of people do want quality control that is relatively strict.

The issue that very few people are willing to acknowledge or bring up is the Dunning-Kruger effect. It’s a demonstrated cognitive bias that unskilled (or lesser skilled) people display, whereby they’re incapable of seeing the flaws in their work, and bizarrely tend to judge their own work as being of equal or even higher quality than something which is objectively better. And yes, there are some objective standards in art - this idea that art is totally subjective is a load of balls. While the interpretation and appeal of concepts and ideas is subjective, there are absolutely some objective criteria when it comes to judging - a shitty render is a shitty render, there are no two ways about it. And unfortunately there are people on this site who get upset when their frankly inferior work gets rejected, because they’re incapable of seeing the flaws in their work themselves. And then they think they’re victims in some huge cosmic injustice, because they look at other work in the gallery and their flawed perspective distorts things to the point where they seriously believe their own work is better than work currently in the gallery, when in fact that they should take a better approach to learning and improving. I’ve seen this time and time again on this site.

I concede that there are occasionally situations when a piece of work which is actually quite good gets rejected for some reason, and I understand why the artist gets upset in cases like that. It happens. But frankly, the majority of those who get upset and complain have actually posted work that is mediocre or worse. And I’m sorry if my comments here offend anyone, but I’m calling it like it is.

When this site was originally launched, the WIP forums were the heart and soul of it - people came here to learn and talk about their work. Nowadays, it seems like too many people have this opinion that they have an inalienable right to have their work included in the showcase galleries, it’s like they come here solely to boost their egos. I wish people would take the WIP forums more seriously again, and approach this site with a view to learn and develop as an artist, instead of simply post work to get fanboy replies.

Hi Leigh! I understand you, i thought CGS Gallery was something else, thus the confusion. A small suggestion is that you should maybe be more vigelant not to let mediocre work get in, then people will be less confused.
In any case, all the best,
M

Well, I was going to comment on this but it seems Milivoj corrected himself. No problem.
I know I’m guilty of this too but work really should go through the WIP section before being submitted for approval. More eyes on a piece can only make it better.

Actually I could see why that could be labeled ‘unfinished’. Its not really textured but there is an attempt to make a composition out of it. Its almost too composed (with background) to be considered just a ‘model study’. First thing i miss-“why are the teeth the exact same color as the rest of the skull?!”
Its this just about the models or something else?-if something else did they finish it? In my opinion-not really…

I have the magic answer for the mods! Compile a list of all the threads that sound like this one.
In the standard reply link to this compiled list of threads.
By the time the offended is done reading them all they will be too exhausted to complain.

Job done.
