Free Rig--rigged with TSM2 for Maya

#1

After slogging out all the remaining problems, I’ve finally got The Setup Machine 2 for Maya to the point where it can make a rig fit to be used by other people. So I’m posting this rig free to the net. Take a look, tell me what you think, use it for anything you want. It’s designed to allow a great deal of real control over a character’s shape, allowing you to squash and reshape pretty much any part of the body.

This rig is in a Maya 6.5 .ma file. It should work fine with 6.0 if you change the headers, but it won’t work with 5.0.

Here’s some movies I made a few weeks ago displaying some of the features of the rig. Many features have been added since then so this isn’t a complete list, but it gives you a good idea of what this rig was designed for:

The Setup Machine 2 for Maya is an autorigging system that we expect to release sometime in November. Here’s some videos of what the beta version looks like in action, rigging up this very same character:

Sold!

Really enjoying all the power in this setup. The proxy overlay is fantastic and adds a whole other level of control. Man I wish this was coming out sooner then November 15th. I know I plan on re-rigging our Bishop character (he is the character we use for the 3rd semester of Animation Mentor) as soon as it is out.

I do have a few suggestions, mostly personal likes. I would love to see the arm and leg reshaping controls on one respective control curve. So have the leg reshaping be on the Leg IK Control. I know that one already has a lot in the channel box but it seems like it makes more sense.

Would also like to see one more control curve on the spine to really open up the possibilities of reshaping the torso. I know you can use the proxy overlay for more fine tuning but I think one more control would make that less necessary.

Like I said before, this is really impressive. A huge leap over the previous version. Nice job Anzovin crew!!!

…same message as I posted in your Yahoo forum but I really wanted to stress how much I am enjoying this rig! LOL

Cool y forward on both elbows!!! I have been messing around with the new rig for a few days and I love it. I also use Mike Comets poseDeformer a fair bit too. It wasnt compatable on TSM1 rigs because its mirror function didnt like the elbow joints. Hopefully, this new rig could be the answer. Well done guys.

It’s actually a very good question whether PoseDeformer will work with TSM2. PoseDeformer–as I understand it–works with the idea that your mesh is skinned directly to the joints involved. With TSM2 autoweighting, the mesh is getting skinned to influence objects instead. I’m thinking of getting in contact with Mike Comet and talking to him about whether there’s a way to get them to work together smoothly.

Got any specific querstions?

I havn’t yet had a chance to see if poseDeformer works on the TSM2 rig, but I can tell you that after posing and resculpting, poseDeformer asks what influences - not joints - were moved to create the pose. Wether or not this has anything to do with were the mesh was skinned to, I cant tell you, but I will give it a go and see what comes up.

Raf, i want to say this rig is incredible, and has opened up a whole new set of ideas to me, thanks so much for sharing it with us!
I wanted to know (if it’s not a trade secret) how you set the proxy skin up? I understand the geometry is driven by the proxy, but is it through blend shapes, or clusters, or something else? sorry if it’s a basic question, i’ve only recently gotten my toes wet with rigging.

Thanks! It’s done with Influence Objects. The auto-weighting skins the surface to the proxy as influences, so when you’re manipulating the proxy, you’re controlling the surface very directly.

I’ve been playing with the new TSM2 test rig for half a day now… its addictive!
very impressive Raf!

Cheers,

Steve.

I’ve been playing with this too. Very nice setup. Allows nearly infinite control to the animator, but simplicity too. I’ve seen a lot of setups where the complexity gets in the way of the simple stuff.

Love it.

congrats, been playing around with this rig, and its so simple, so flexible, and does EVERYTHING i want, and more. Except for the fact its not free! lol man what i would do with this if i had the full version, lol but unfortunately on a poor animation student budget. OH well…

It’s there, but the name has changed (the movies were recorded with a beta version of the rig). The attribute is now called Display and has three modes: Geometry, Proxy Overlay, and Proxy Only.
