hey welcome to the forums, you matte paintings are great, specially the first one, I liked it very much, how did you do the waterfalls? the ice environments are cool but the water need more work to look photo real, well done and great break downs

Hey there lolvigne

I think you have some good work in your showreel but there are some ways you can improve it.

if you want to be a matte painter then i would suggest just having the mattes in there. I don’t think the 3d work and personal drawings, good as they are, add much to your reel.
You also need to think also about how you present your work, some of the camera shots in the 3d section were a bit nauseating as they shook so much!

Having said that you obviously know how to make a good matte using reference. I would focus on this and take one and polish it abit more, push it to the next stage of quality.

good luck!

hi  jaime!! wow, thank you for the nice reply.
waterfalls- I added waterfalls sequences in fusion.
I have no idea how to express real water at that time…
so I made a ocean shader by using maya, but it looks more terrible…
I’ll try to think other solution about this…thanks!!

I think your work shows good potential, but a little more time and attention to detail could push it to the next level.

  • Have a look at some nature documentaries. There is a pool of reference there on how real cameras are used to shoot the natural environment, and if you can replicate real camera movements then it will sell your paintings a lot more.
  • On the same lines as before, but have a look at real camera framings and see how they work. What is the cameraman trying to show and how can you create a scene that feels more natural like that.
Also, be careful with mist / fog. It can be good for adding depth and atmosphere, but I think it is hurting a lot of your paintings. It is better to get as far as you can with well informed colour choices to sell the atmosphere, and only use cloud and fog if it is correct for that environment.

All in all some nice work and it looks like with a bit more work you can get some really nice shots to strengthen the reel.

ps. LOVE that lion drawing!
