You are wrong on all accounts: here’s the proof:
A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following six offences in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:
[ul]
[li] kicks or attempts to kick an opponent[/li][li]trips or attempts to trip an opponent[/li][li]jumps at an opponent[/li][li]charges an opponent[/li][li]strikes or attempts to strike an opponent[/li][li] pushes an opponent[/li][/ul] A direct free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if a player
commits any of the following four offences:
[ul]
[li]tackles an opponent to gain possession of the ball, making contact with the opponent before touching the ball[/li][li]holds an opponent[/li][li]spits at an opponent[/li][li]handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area).[/li][/ul]Source: http://www.fifa.com/en/regulations/regulation/0,1584,3,00.html
The ref made a wrong call. Nothing more, nothing less.
As for the Italian red card, as stated before, that WAS a red card. A two-feet tackle studs up = direct red.
What happened in previous matches is totally irrelevant, and i can’t believe people use it as an argument.

i really liked how they behave during the game. that’s fair play and play with heart. but…the world cup continues.
“WHO IS THE FAT GUY NOW?”
