I cannot believe that! :eek: That was a ridiculous decision by the ref. I just can’t believe it! Australia dominated the match and really deserved a win or at least a draw. Granted, the ref wasn’t as bad as some of the others Australia have had but it all came down to the last decision and there is absolutely no excuse for it. It’s a sad day for Australia. Nice work though boys, you did us proud.

This seems to be the opinion of many of you here on cg talk…well the truth is, it was dreadful defending - one of the rudimentry rules of being a defender is to…STAY ON YOUR FEET and don’t dive in. Sorry, it may be harsh - but it happens…I remember Phil Neville giving away a penalty in the last minutes of a major tournement (I think it was against Portugal) but the fact is if a player dives in he will run the risk of this happening. It was amaturish at best - the angle was tight, had he stayed on his feet…well it might have been a different story - he should have stayed upright, strong and marshalled the player. Another thing, Hiddink was too cautious after the sending off - he should have got the team to really hammer the Italian goal. ANd it has to be said the Italians defended brilliantly - their experience told in the end.

']My heart goes out to the Australian fans. That was not a penalty. Italians got lucky and they have blagged their way to the sem-finals as I doubt Ukraine or Switzerland will be able to beat them. Clever diving by the Italian guy and the team as a whole. Everytime an Australian was fouled he got up straight away…Italians on the other hand even when not fouled made a big diving drama.

What is stopping FIFA from using technology? Decisions can be made almost instantly by replays these days. I don’t buy the time will be wasted argument. I want teams to loose because they were beaten squarely and not by refs messed up decisions.

that definitely wasn’t a penatly. and also the game should’ve been stopped two minutes earlier. unfortunatelly australia become another “damaged by the ref” team on this event. i also agree that they should use a benefits that technology can offer. maybe not for offsides, but for situations like this and similar.

Regarding technology, replays etc, they’ve been using it for Rugby games for years and it doesn’t seem to slow the pace much if at all.

Even this season, the CFL, which for some reason didn’t believe in video replay, finally introduced it to the similar style that it is used in the NFL. Already 2 weeks into the season and we have seen how bad some refs calls can be because there have been a number of overturned calls so far.

Would be nice to include video replay on some of those incidents in football (soccer) that seem to overturn a match in favor of the divers (or simulators as it’s called).

That Ukraine Switzerland match was unbelievably bad. Hard luck to switzerland I think they played the better football in open play. Needed the dreaded penalty shootout to sort it out and the swiss looked really tired taking their penalties. On the basis of the two games today, not sure Italy vs Ukraine will be a classic either!

']In general I think there is lot of corruption in football. The current fiasco with Serie A clubs/players involved in match fixing is probably the tip of the iceberg. It will be all swept under the carpet. Football is big business–>big business and corruption go hand in hand :deal:

I would like to point out that the Aussies made an excellent impression in this WC and my impression is that they will be a regular guest at these tournaments (as opposed to some of the african one-hit-wonders)

Dont want to add to the penalty discussion, but I think you might find it interesting to hear what Schwartzer had to say on German television right after the game (no direct quote, I am paraphrasing)

“I havent seen the replays yet, but you have to understand that the referee does not have a replay. He has to decide within seconds. I cant tell wether or not it was a penalty. We did not lose today, because of that penalty, but because we did not score a single goal today.”

Now, to say something like that right when you have just been eliminated from the World Cup deserves heartfelt respect.
