For Chikega - SSS

#39

Cool Thomas!
I am a big fan of procedural textures too!
BTW ( Lyle  )the it would be cool to use those textures to drive some deformation ( mesh displacement )that we can tweak in viewports ( basically procedural modeling ) .

#40

chikega, you’ve motivated me  so I’ve started some experimenting of my own.

#41

Very cool FB_Turbine - I’m glad others are chiming in - the more the merrier:beer:

#42

I don’t have anything useful, but I think we need a sticky “Render Settings” thread. This is good stuff!

Here’s a quick spin of the elephant.

elephant anim 975kb QuickTime

#44

this is mine with lw,no plugin
it is a animation

#45

This is with much less transparency.
elephant anim2 1.1mb QuickTime

FB_turbine: Thanks for posting those - I like the second one better - has a more substantial feel to it even though it’s not as transparent.

penny1: Nice maggot:) Looks like you’re using the old Luminosity channel trick.

For those that are interested - a new discussion group has been created by Glen Miller. It deals with just the rendering side of messiah:Studio. So, if you’re interested:

I decided to get back to basics by doing some real world observations on the SSS effect … essentially an ongoing exploration of simulating reality with various apps including messiah:studio …

Nice render of the candle, but the hand looks totally fake.

wow… this message system made clones of my post, and I didnt even hit “send”…

good!!!

Those are really nice test renderings, Penny1. You should really consider posting those on the LW forum for other LW’ers to see. Maybe a description/tutorial on how you achieved the volumetric SSS. Looks like OGO_Hikari and you say without plugins - very nice.

uh… it’s a photograph, jimpajammer.:hmm:

SSS works on transucent materials and one of its parameters is the viewing angle as well as the light angle. So, in many cases, this can be “faked” using gradients and tweaking.
As long as it looks good, no plugins are necessary.
However, in the cheating cases, some weaknesses are encountered.
Nothing surprising

Actually, what makes Penny1’s embryo interesting is the apparent depth of the eyeball … I’ve come to find out that this is done by rendering out its depth buffer and applying that to the embryo in the luminosity channel. I’ll have to try that out with messiah.

This sample was done by Larry Shultz using the same technique.

I thought I’d bump this up for those who haven’t seen what messiah 1.5’s SSS implementation is capable of. 2.0 should be even more interesting.

Bump-a roon

ok, here is what im thinking about:

this sord is rendered in cinema without gi, it has no textures applied, only one material with a green color, some highlight, and finaly the sss effect with a gradient that goes from red to orange to white.

these color differences make a nice effect in my eyes. i think i could follow the process of shading in messiah, but could it be possible to achive an effect like above?

probably to apply a gradient that is kind of plugged into the colorchannel and is stretched from inside to outside (a volumetric effect?)

if someone got an idea of how to do this i would be very interested in it.

thx a lot
