Foley, SFX

Ok, So I’ve gone through the story boards a number of times now.

Before I start getting into the grunt of the sound tests, I’m really curious to hear about how others are visualizing the sounds of this film.

I can see it working many ways, but here’s two primary ideas.

Subtle, uncharacterized sounds. Sounds that really sell the believabilty of movement in a 3D world. Let the emotion talk through the movement, and primiarly use the SFX to sell the solidity of the objects in the scene.

Or…

We could also have some fun by giving the objects a voice. Not physically audible speech, however a series of ‘almost’ engilish ) gruns, moans, heavy sighs that will really give the world some emotion, humor, and style.

A good example would be slight grunts behind the bangs as Orange repeatedly hits his head into the wall. These grunts would indicate a blur between force, and pain. We could even invent a gruntled language for their world. where you dont know exactly what is being said, but on the same token, you know because of how its said.

Just two ideas, curious to hear others. Then we can do some examples and tests and see what we think works best.

This is going to be alot of fun

I actually don’t mind the idea of the subtle gruntled language and I think it could work if done well. But, I also think that the decision of silence from characters or some sound from characters can change the film dramatically.

I was also just thinking about some sort of ‘squeeking’ noise for characters as they jump or bounce. But again, it’s the question of whether or not to have silence apart from music?

hmmm, your right. That’s the tricky part.

Simplicity is a key factor in this short. So naturaly you’d assume the SFX to be simple too. And have a nice musical score to play throughout. With subtle ‘collision’ effects in the background.

Theres really so many ways to do this, so lets get everyone brainstorming on what we think would be the best solution.

I think audio cues to the character’s emotions will really help convey the meaning in each shot. I’m not sure what type of noise these characters should make … you’ll have to experiment with the pre-vis clips until we hear something that sounds right.

R2D2 has a very distinctive warble and chirp pattern that expresses his emotions well. If we can find a distinctive sound for these cubes that accomplishes the same level of conviction, I’ll be a very happy guy.

You’re the expert … play around and have fun. I’ll definately be interested in hearing what you can do with this short’s audio.
