I was wondering the same thing some time ago.
After evaluation, I thought Realflow would be easier to use with better results.
X-Particles’ giant toolbox and possibilities seemed a little overwhelming in comparison.
I purchased Realflow, and I must say, that I’m not that impressed with the plugin.
- Updates come really slow. Realflow for S22 came several months after S22 was introduced. Realflow for R23 is still not available
- Realflow for C4D is really only for small-scale simulations. In, really small. A bowl of milk, some splashes on a tire. Anything bigger is beyond the capabilities of the solver.
- It doesn’t play too nice with other software. For example, Realflow’s “Dumb particles” (for foam and other FX), don’t render with Motionblur in Redshift. Quite a dealbreaker! The Redshift-team was really responsive about this and couldn’t find an error on their side, Nextlimit’s communication is… well… not that active. This problem is still not solved, for example.
- Most importantly, I must say that the simulation results aren’t really -that- impressive. You have to invest massive amounts of simulation time to get interesting results, and iteration becomes really hard. (Thats on really fast hardware)
- Last point: For the performance, the price is simply too high
On the other hand, X-Particles seems to…
- Update really fast. X-Particles was ready for R23 on what, Day 1? Day2? Really good.
- The new Fluid-Flip solver seems to give really interesting results in terms of simulation quality. I attached a screenshot from Insydiums homepage, and I must say: Realflow’s stuff tends to look more like the left image.
- It seems to be really simple to get things like foam running
- For the price, you get a whole bunch of other stuff you didn’t even ask for
After watching some tuts, I still find it intimidating, but not so much anymore
So, I can’t really comment on X-Particles yet, but I will definetly try it out.
Realflow, yeah. Not impressed, sadly :\
PS: I’d love to hear about my assumptions from X-Particles-Users!
