Just found this neat stuff…

-no container bounding limitation
-vortex base
-seems not volume render, but using tons of particles
-realTime!

don’t know if this posted here yet…check it out…

Looks pretty good!
Thiago Costa also developed the SPH Fluid Node which is pretty cool and ICE is absolutly capable of using tons of particles.

emFluid is another alternative which looks promising. Version 3 is coming soon and the price is really low in comparison to the exocortex plugin.

In conjuction with the emRPC you can achieve a krakatoa like look i think.
So lots of competition…but competition is good to push the boundaries even further

btw.
I just started using Dynamics in Maya and want to thank all the contributors to this thread for lots of valueable information and the example scenes provided!

For turbulence I would use a volume axis field with away from center set to zero. Use the turbulence in the volume axis field to create the kinds of effect you are looking for. Very low values though like start at .1

Continuing the discussion above.
I’m still a student and after July I’ll be thrown to the lions in a matter of speaking.
Here in Portugal I’ve been told a lot that investing in the area of Fx is a waste of time.
Unfortunately all the market here is dedicated to architectural visualization but I don’t get it because this market is in a huge crises. During my studies I made two internships in two different companies and again architectural visualization was the main objective and Max the main software. So as a Maya user I rendered only some stuff and worked a lot on post production, in the first company used Fusion in the second Nuke. Time to time was needed to create some certain fx, fire or water and we had always to recur to people outside or buy footage to create that effect.
After some time of deliberation I’ve decided to dedicate my last year at university to fluid simulations, to a specialization. Half year has passed and a lot of threads were created and a lot of questions were answered. During this time, in this small time experience, I’ve tried to create realistic water and fire. Started using Rf in the first and it was a good choice. The creation of fire as been difficult. Especially the dynamic movement of actions that is my objective. I’ve acquire some nice skills in the creation of fire in maya thanks to David Schoneveld and Tod Palamar (books, emails talks and DVD’s). But still this wasn’t enough because of the little time I had to give and to learn it. I’m doing an Master thesis (dissertation) at the same time that as helped me a lot to understand the real nature of fluids and of the differents softwares that are in the market and also in-house softwares (Naiad from exottic matter was a very impressive discovery, maybe some day it will be a part of Maya) With Realflow I got, with basic knowledge, some good results (explosion, water drops, splashes) but with Maya I’m having some difficulties.

So I decided to see what FumeFx could offer me. I’ve never worked with Max, that was what scared me and still is. The first thing I noticed was that it was a little similar with RF in the learning path. Quick and simple. I really love Maya and I’m still struggling with it to get some nice fire results to use them in my final animation project but as I’m looking to Allan DVD’s the solutions he presents really get my attention.

To conclude, sorry for this huge text. My opinion as a person (future effects artist)that is giving is first steps in this area is that FumeFx is a lot more easier to learn and Allan is the main guilty of it  but it’s interface is easy to understand even if we did’t have hes tutorials. A couple of months ago I enter in this forum with the question which software should I use Maya or Fume? I don’t have a straight answer yet but what I definitely think is that Maya should have and more easy interface, like FumeFx. I’m still devoting my attention to both but because the lack of tutorials I’ll end up using FumeFx to create two of the three shapes that I’m creating for my animation project and leave one to Maya. I’m still deciding this because I’m thinking with my heart, if I listen to my reason she’s saying to use Fume to create the all 3. We will see, without heart I will never be a good artist. So we will see how it goes. I’m really looking forward to see what new tutorials you will create Allan, after Creature Fx: Volume 1.
Cheers

That is way cool, now why dont the lads down in Autodesk do something like this for Maya?! It will mean goodbye navier-stokes and long hours watching voxels burn forever, I would love to see that day come.

#566

You could add Blur studio to that list

My first try on Fire with fume

My Second Try on Fire With Fume

My Third Try on Fire With Fume

I know this is not good but will try to make best soon.Need Your Tips.Thnx

Last night I was reading some of the old posts and topics searchng for some info I needed and I saw that before everyone was trying to make flamethrowing stuff xD.So I decide to try myself :>.This is what I came up with at the end of the day ^_^.
Btw the quality is much worse after I shrink it after AE T_T.
pic -the uper one is after size shrinking and the other one is after AE :>.

Great stuff it turned out really nice, That’s with Maya fluids?
I’d probably try to make it much faster but great motion in there!

#570

Yes sir,it’s good OLD Maya fluids :>.
You are totaly right it was suposed to be faster ,but I came up with 1 problem :>.To drive it I used 1 Uniform and 1 Volume Axis fields,so when I increased they’re magnitude fluid’s begining was looking rly rly bad.I was thinking to bypass that by rendering like 480 frames(which is ruffly 20 sec),becouse 1 frame was only 10-13 sec rend, and to time remap it to smth like 10-15 sec with AE so it can go faster and I wont have that problem :> or even increasing the slover quality, but that will mean dead to my laptop so… xD.
The opacity graph is kinde a weird with only one tiny spike (as you will see from the pic xD ).
Also I’m combining *.png files with AE and every time I’m trying to “enhance” the rend results xD,so I added and played a little bit with Glow effect from the AE :>.

If you want I can send you the scene file its not a problem just send me msg with your e-mail :>.

Is there a way to do something like that without caching the sim? On big resolutions i can t cache simulations, maya crash

#572

^^

its a bug in maya 2009, works in 2010 & 2008. It can be done in 2009 as long as you don’t cache the velocity channel, I think there is still a limit, not sure what - I’ve just cached a 10 mega voxel sim in 2009.

Chris

ok, thanks!

#574

Just out of curiosity, how often is maya fluid effects used in comparison to fume fx? I am a maya user and lately I have been seeing jobs mostly looking for strictly max fume users. I dont wanna say I should kick my self in the foot for trying to learn maya fluids so in depth, but maybe I should start picking up max and learning that… I here its easier then maya fluids any way.

#575

Learn both or the one that’ll get you a job.

#576

I started using Maya fluids, now i wish i had spent that time learning fume.

#577

Why not learn them both? was learning maya fluids that much of a waste of time? sure fumefx maybe easier to pick up and get near-instant results but look at how many shops use it, the numbers do seem to be picking up but whether you like it or not most places will rely on maya fluids or their own propriety stuff.

At the end of the day fluids are fluids, they all share the same principles, if you know one it shouldn’t take too long to pick up another.

Take it easy,

Chris

#578

Agreed with Chris, and if you learn the two packages, you might be able to create tools that you like in one and that are missing in the other. It gives you a better understanding and a better global vision.

#579

You bet.
I’m at the moment trying to learn both for my academic project.
Let’s see the end results.

Ps - I love Cobra The Animation
Cheers

maya fluids are pretty capable, but haven’t really changed much since the very beginning. Here are a couple links from fire I did back in '04:

and

I am going to play with fume fx in the near future. Some of the examples that I have seen look really great!
