Fluid Effects vs Fume FX

#341

20 million particles! bahahaha no wonder i cant compete with using Maya. Sure most of that stuff nobody can come close to with their learning edition of Maya and dual core hardware, but I dont think we are here to cry about what everyone else can do better with other software. Some of us wait for the day when AD decides to implement all that great stuff into the mother of all software which we hope will be Maya, but past experience tells me to go towards the light whhere I see a huge SideFX logo backlit and surrounded by tonnes of fog.

#342

Well, you ruined everything David.
I was a happy, ignorant, Maya Fluids student an then you came up with this  .
You should not do that lol.
Now serious, I was already familiarized with some of these videos, they are amazing.
The tool is just a way, the final result is the most important.
For now i´ll stay with Maya but who knows maybe tomorrow i´ll try something in fume.
Cheers

PS: Just want to share some of my research on Fluids, especially in Maya, for my Master Thesis: http://www.vitorteixeira.com/blog/university/dissertation/research/

#343

I need to do some research on FumeFX, for those who already made the switch, is it similar to working with fluids in Maya? Obviously, it looks a lot better but would you recommend learning fluids in Maya first so that it will be easier? Or should i not waste my time with Mayas Fluids lol.

#344

nice collection of resources.

I just finished my own thesis on fluids in Houdini. You might find it an interesting read:
http://nccastaff.bournemouth.ac.uk/jmacey/MastersProjects/MSc09/Claes/index.html
thesis:
http://nccastaff.bournemouth.ac.uk/jmacey/MastersProjects/MSc09/Claes/thesis/PeterClaesThesis.pdf

This is quite an interesting thread, telling me something about the speed maya fluids still offer, but also about the lack of control over them as you still need to go to the level of plug-in writing to implement certain functionality. I have not yet tried out Fume myself, but heard it is mostly a black box.

fume/houdini/ or Maya fluids.
Is this wt we are here to judge? they all have their own sweet things to offer!
but wt I have seen so far from this thread is the skill power of individual artist driving these tool especially maya fluids which is the mother of all coz Its been their since maya 4 or 4.5.
Wt thesis of houdini I have seen so far… obiviously it looks gr8,but isnt it doable with maya fluids?
I believe its possible!
Just need a good approach & good machine
I m getting windows 7 by this week & I hope it will improve my cpu power much.
Its true tht Maya need a good volume renderer or particle renderer at this point.
but things can be faked.
I was wondering if anyone has implemented Wavelet turbulence with maya fluids yet!
If any of us has any info on tht then Plz expose. As this is right time were all fuid freaks are keeping their eye on this thread.

learning new tool is not bad thing at all but expertising one tool is always helpful.
I feel My learning curve is growing day by day on maya Fluids.
I dont get much time to write any thesis as I m not a student anymore. but being a full fledge artisit I can share my all experience here .
hope to expect same from other Professionals.
I guess I m not offending anyone here. My main concern is on skills rather than tools.
Best
Vik

Hey Viki.

Thanks for your flamescene, it was very inspiring and good learning. I’m hoping to post some tests myself soon :-).

I have a quick question, on your first post of the flameth… the playblast, how did you get such a good represention of the fluid? Mine kind of looks like crap, and it’s hard to see what it is…

Thanks
//Anders

#347

You are totally right Vikas but to some of us these questions of what type of software is best are important to guys, like me, that are giving the first steps in this world.
I´ve created in vimeo a channel and a group where we can contribute with more experiences, skills and knowledges like the ones we were seeing in the posts above.
Please continue with that, they were quite amazing.

Group:

Hey djhush!
its the same file of wt I have uploaded here. the only difference is tht its double the res of the above uploaded scene file & few minor changes in attributes like in opacity which is why its having a better preview than current scene. I have given normally an smoke opacity settings to tht playblast version. coz I cannot afford to render such hires stuff at the moment but will be rendering soon as my machine gets free from other jobs.
If u are still having any problems with fire scene then PM me with ur email id. I wuld share my scene file with U :).

@VitorTeixeria : hey dude thnxs for the invitation. i have joinde ur Group & will try to contribute my best as much as I can!

I’m going to learn fume, to some extent. I’m not really interested in max at all, but I would learn what I need to, to get by and use fume. Its a tool to have in your tool box, you know? If you are already really good at one, learn another in your spare time. If you are just “good” get better at the one you are good at.

I love how Vik pushes the academic tests. Some very cool results, no real need to learn other tools. My guess is that these plug-in will be in Maya in 2 years time. Still learning them in Max will have it’s virtues, and benefits now.

Hey Destruct007, I’ve gotta say that I love your blog, It gives me lots of inspiration. Just want u to know

#351

well, big thank at vikas , james and other users.
I’m try to use fumeFX, but not good for a not real interactivity like maya. ANyway great plugin.

This is a great VFX man. He use Fume:
http://www.vimeo.com/2816831

I’m learning from past 2 mounts, the tutorials of http://www.modernmayhem.com/home.html
Ok not free, but for the production approache this is a great begin.
And my image, from a tutorial on this site, ok my image maybe is not great, but i’m happy to know more of fluid effects.

(My english is an opinion  )

#352

hey, don’t change my mind …Maya is always best and will stay best…we won,we will, rock you.

#353

Yep I agree with some comments made here. My objective and the objective of others it seems, is to push the software we are currently working with - thats the whole idea of this thread. All of the resource that is being posted on fume and houdini is fine, what we are trying to do is recreate that same effect the Maya way.

I dont think there is any resistance to learning another piece of software, its just based on the resources some of us lack at the time, time and money being to 2 biggies.

#354

Different software for different needs. Check this video, and guess what software was used. Before you go reading the comments =).

#355

Thats some awesome effects right there, has anyone used Particular? Just wondering what it is like working with the After effects interface. I was just looking at the audioWave node in Maya when you posted this and though the movement is easily achievable, the detail with the fluids I cant get with Maya especially not with the apparent ease Particular seems to get.

#356

ooo nice, makes me think that one day there will be stream lined tools dedicated to doing effects, in the same way that there are tools dedicated to sculpting (zBrush, mudbox)

#357

Particular is pretty cool. We own it here at work. I believe the new version, which we don’t own, has self shadowing now.

#358

Yeah, that video is pretty neat. Introduced me to Olafur Arnalds music too (which is wonderful, btw).

The output is really great for something achieved purely in AE and Trapcode. Pretty unbelievable.

Now, I think fumefx is better than mayaFluid.

http://vimeo.com/1740144

http://vimeo.com/5526147

These two examples are fumefx, the details are quiet great.

Maya Fluid is easy to make cloud but it is difficult to make fire and smoke like fumefx.

#360

wow both of those examples look like shit.

i think you can do much better with maya OR fume lol.

Anyway, its not the software, its the artist…
