Flicker Free Monitors

#1

Hi,

Just curious as to what monitors you guys are using and any recommendation on something thats easy to stare at for long periods and of course, with wide viewing angles and at least a 8bit panel. PVA seems to be the problem for me and these newer E-IPS models, they have a shift in contrast to each eye, when viewed closer than 50cm.

And most importantly it needs to be flicker free, i.e. PWM free backlighting. None of this strobing effect for reducing brightness. The reason why I get headaches I’ve recently discovered.

Any help or input is greatly appreciated.

For starters it’s not a good idea to look at the monitor from closer than 50cm. That itself could be giving you headaches. Use software to enlarge things on the display rather than moving your head closer to the monitor.

An LCD monitor with LED backlight can be flicker free when set to the maximum brightness. The lower the brightness the more apparent the flickering will be with LED backlight. As far as I know all other LCD backlight technologies inherently flicker (CCFL use alternating current). There are non-LCD display technologies but I think they use PWM to vary intensity of the pixels (AMOLED, plasma).

Not saying PWM backlight dimming isn’t giving you headaches but be sure that everything else is proper. Don’t look at the monitor closeup, take a five minute break and walk around every hour, make sure the lighting isn’t causing glares, get your eyes checked out if you haven’t recently, all that good stuff.
