Flame on linux?

#1

does anyone have any idea when it will come?

#2

Since the latest ā€œgreat featureā€ they added was IRIX only (64Bit support, which it could and actually SHOULD have had since long) I wonder whether they will put out the Linux-Flame soon.
I think its more interesting what happens to inferno. Considering the fact that SGI stopped production of those last winter, I wonder what discreet is going to do about this now…

If you actually have the $225,000 to buy one of these, then maybe you should contact Discreet directly and ask them. It still requires a lot of expensive hardware to run. Just because it works on linux, doesn’t make it any cheaper then on Sgi.

I have worked at a few companies over the last year who has it on linux, but I’m not sure if they were beta units of it it has already shipped.

SGI only stoped production of the Onyx 2(which is 10 years old). Inferno still runs fine on the Onyx 350 and I believe they were looking at Tezro as an option.

I don’t have $300,000

HINT BEAKER HINT.

how ever I can get the flame software for 5,000 and I can build the system for what I want for about 3,000 how ever if they port in to linux my life is soooo much easyer and cheaper…

haha, thats rich, don’t know much about FFI do we. Flame software won’t even start up without a stone and wire fiber channel array and the i/o card hooked up in the machine. Stone has to be licensed to every serial number of the drives in the array and the i/o card. Thats like 20-30k worth of equipment without the actual box. Good luck though.

#6

hehe. These softs cost the eyes of theface. But taking off all the hardware how much it must cost license for example of the Flint or Flame?

#7

Well in theory it could be a bit cheaper The IBM Intellistation should be quite cheaper than a tezro. Granted thats just one part of the package but it should make it a little bit cheaper.

Ups… I thought they cancelled the complete Onyx line. Good to know… Though I doubt we will ever see a support for Onyx 4…

If I’m not much mistaken price of flame software alone (yes you can get only the software, if you had the gear already) is still a 6 digit number…

Actually, I think I saw somewhere (don’t remember where) that the software alone is $90,000… so only 5 digits!

What a bargain!

#9

Depends on the currency

I sort of remember when we got our flame and inferno some years ago flame soft list-price used to be more than 200.000 DM (if I remember correctly) Now with the euro and the current change to $ and the years that passed it might be just narrowly touching the 6

In any case. It’s still rather heavy…

Your thinking of Flint, it is around 90k. Flame is 250k and Inferno is 350k.

#11

Are you sure these are Software only prices? I’m rather certain that you could get a flint/smoke bundle for about 110.000Ā€ some time ago. So I’d guess the 90.000 for a flint is a complete system not just the software. Oh well.
