First Post- Got Inspired by LOTR critiques Appreciated

Nice nice nice. I am still not sure about the wood paneling, but the overall feel and detail level is coming up and looks nice.

#22

Very nice. I’d like to see a wireframe. I tried recently to model some architecture but ended up with problems due to the kinds of polys used, so I wonder how you tackle it.

#23

Seems like everytime I do any kinda of architecture I get poly problems as well that always result from knife and boolean functions in lightwave, on this project I have tried to make the majority of my cuts clean but I had a bunch of trouble with the lattice details seen in the new pics. I finally converted them over to triangles and that solved it, you get a whole lot less problems when you change over to triangles on some stuff so that is what I have found to work for me thus far when i have problems resulting from boolean stuff. Here are some Wires of the Lattice and a few other things, hope this helps…

Half

BTW- I just check out some more of the LOTR architecture and am trying to see if I can find a solution to the panelling stuff…

#24

looks great!
nice developement too.

what’s the polycount so far?

I did some major reworking of the base of the tower in this scene and I think everyone will love the changes (I sure did). After seeing lord of the rings again and seeing all of the excellent architecture througout that movie I have tried to mimic some of what I saw and have come up with some definite improvements, I am going to try to apply this same style to the other buildings as well (It will be a pain but it will be well worth it). Here is the render of the new tower base beside the old and a pic of where I got it from.

And the reference:

Critiques are welome,

Very nice! The new style makes it so much more believeable. This project just went from good looking to great looking!

#27

yes  now that’s looking like stone work

#28

Nice work with the modeling, keep it up…

#29

Made some major Revisions on the the Bridge part of the project, I think you all will agree for the better, here is a shot with the new and the old bridge side by side,

And here is another shot of the new bridge by itself:

As Always comments and critiques are welcome, and BTW i will put a pic of the model as a whole up to this point when I finish rebuilding everything so that is looks more stonelike…

Looks a lot better! One crit. You know ive always had a problem with the railings…i just dont think they fit the look of everything else. Maybe if you could try something more like this it would look better… …it might be a bit of work to change every one of them, but it would be well worth it. At least think about it.

#31

Thats some kickass stuff right there  Great going, dude

otacon: Does some people call you the space cowboy? Some people call me gangster of love :stuck_out_tongue:

#32

Na nobody calls me that, its just from the anime Cowboy Bebop:)

Here’s a photograph from downtown DC near the capitol building. This has some elements that you might copy throughout: columns, pilasters (square columns engaged to the building), the stone railing, the entablature, and some of the engraving ideas.

I finally was struck with an idea as to how to do the steps and keep the same architecural form, I still havn’t changed the railing over to anything different yet (That will be a task and a half), here are the new pics, tell me what ya think:

Going to work on changing over the building at the end of the bridge(not shown in pic) next and also a couple of new buildings, thats all folks,

The updates look sweet. Those stairs look a lot better now. I see what you mean about those archways needing smoothed out. Hopefully you will be able to fix that.

#36

All the ways you folks have helped so far, Here is what the original (pre-cgtalk model looked like) as opposed to all the changes that have been made because of you all.

Here are the comparison Pics, I took the exact same shot twice, one with the old model, one with the new, I was rather impressed by the difference…

You all have been a major help, keep the critiques coming

Thx Again,

Thats a big difference, and all for the better.

#38

Yesssss. looking much better.

I see (or I guess I dont see) above that (once again) the hosting site for my pictures is being stupid (arrrg) thus I am now using lycos, hope it holds out :)…

I am starting a new building which I think is going to become the centerpoint of this whole project, the building is in its very (very very) early stages but I wanted to post so that I could get some feedback before I did some more work on it, this building is pretty large compared to the others so it will probably be a (if not “the”) focal point of the picture. Tell me if I am going wrong :), here are the pics…

Thx as always for any critiques,

edit:
Am going to try and change the pics up above to LYCOS as well so that they will show up…

EDIT: Pics still not working, U must copy and paste the link into your browser… That should do it

Sweet. You might want to turn smoothing on those archways because i can see the segments. Keep adding detail!
