first model- hand

#1

Hi,

I was inspired by a recent response from BazC to try to focus on actually completing something. That in comination with a hand thread on Spiraloid with some incredible images led to the attached. It’s a copy of a hand done by Laa-yosh. The challenge for me was to 1) complete something 2) figure out how to do it in wings 3) Start myself on a mission–to learn how to do all types of hands as well as I can. I’m interested in characters so I figured I’d approach this thing body part by body part.

Any comments would be welcomed.

Thanks

Hi,

I apologize for the size of the image. I was trying to keep to the size limit of 20000. This is the first time I’ve ever attached a document on any forum so if someone could tell me the best size and format I’d appreciate it.

Thanks

Hard to see…

If you have PS 6+… make your image size around 400x300 and then use the File>Save For Web exporter…

Use the setting on the right to get the file under 20k.

Start with JPEG Medium, Progressive & Optimised… then adjust the quality up or down until you meet the 20k requirement.

If yo don’t have the Save For Web option… just try to save the image using the above settings and again tweak until you get there.

for small images (320x240, 8-bit or smaller): GIF or PNG

Hi,

I feel like the newbie I am trying to do this. My attempt at another attachment.

Thanks

It’s good…TS’Good!!(insert bruce almighty’s voice)

Here’s a little critique:

Loops are well place but Proportions are off.

Make the (emphasis)whole(emphasis) volume before adding any details…

The usual volume setup I use is the following,I make a cube, scale, extrude until it fits the proportions of a hand or the reference picture…At this point,I do not cut or connect anything but only envelop the target’s boundaries into a very blockish/cubic form, with the exception of leaving one loop around each finger’s joints…Once it’s done,I smooth it and start to Magnet-Tweak it.

Sometimes it can get tedious with the magnet because of the proximity of the fingers,a quick temp solution is to loopcut the other fingers at the base and delete them, then edit only one so when it’s time to add the other fingers, you’ll just have to duplicate, scale and bridge.

It will save you some time but tweaking them independently is almost inevitable.

Good luck and scuse the french.

If you are also into figure drawing,or are just looking for that extra information about hand proportions, just read the following webpage.

Hi,

Volume first! I’ve read it over and over but in the interest of getting a hand done I went ahead without an image plane. Thanks for the important kick in the…

When you say you smooth the volume, are you meaning you’re smoothing a volume that from the front is one polygon for the palm and a polygon for each finger and thumb (one edge loop around the base joint of each finger.) This quickly gives you a bunch of edges around the fingers and palm that are good, but also a bunch that radiate from the centre of the palm that are not so good. If I’m understanding you right do you then delete the latter ones (radiating from the centre of the palm), and go into magnet tweaking at that point before adding the additional edges. I did most of my magnet tweaking with the majority of edges in place and if I’m understanding you this puts detail before form. This in my mind would mean doing most of the silhouettes/contours of the fingers and palm before adding edges for knuckles and palm lines, etc.

I wondered how people handled the fingers. As you suggested I kept on moving edges of other fingers when I was doing the magnet tweaking.

The web site you mentioned is a great resource. Not just the hand tut, but the general 3d and head ones.

Thanks again.
