Fire effect displacement map?

I am animating a chaarcter that has a poly flame coming from the top of his head.
i need that flame effect to do a ripple/bumpy effect moving up the Y axis.
I started with Joe CosmanMini Tut 2 on isolating the flame effect but
Messiah seems to not have any procedural displacemnts except the bloat and imagemaps via procedurals.

Anyone has any ideas

In LW or Maya, I would have used a fractal shader with its colors oscillating.

Seems like you could just run a noise up on the global y axis and connect it to bump with displacement turned on. Have you tried this. Could use a simple expression connected to time for the yposition.
