Finalgather Sun Timelapse

#1

I am trying to make a timelapse animation of the sun passing by and seem to get the usual flickering problems, although they arent that bad.

Now i am using the append to file option and no GI,
multiframe
512 rays
15 points
max rad 1
2 diffuse bounces

Any ideas ?

Also if i make a fgmap and later append with different settings say 1000 rays instead of 512, will that mess up the fgmap ?

Is it better to make a new fgmap with new settings?

Also, does the anti aliasing have any effect if i render only finalgather ?

I am rendering now with 1024 rays and rad set to 0 and double the rez, but that just take ages. I noticed that is often quicker to double the rez and scaling it later down instead of cranking up the anti aliasing.

Re: the flickering. Are you rendering out the FGmap first and then rendering out the image sequence after that? If not, you might want to try this:

  1. First render a pass where, in the Render Manager > Mental Ray > Optimization, you put Render Type (very top of this PPG) to “Final gathering Only” --> default would likely be “Full Render”

For this also…make sure that in Render Manager > Mental Ray > Final Gathering you have:
(A) “append new FG points to file” AND
(B) indicate the location where you want to save your .fgmap file…do not leave it on the default of [Pass][Frame]…instead you want to generate just one .fgmap file. (the default is rendering one .fgmap file per frame which is not what you want for this…

  1. Next, render the image sequence out where, in the Render Manager > Mental Ray > Optimization, you put Render Type (very top of this PPG) back to “Full Render”.

For this, make sure you change the FG settings in Render Manager > Mental Ray > Final Gathering to:
(A) “Only use FG points from file” AND
(B) keep the existing path that you put in the “Map File” location the same. This should be the path to the file you created in step 1.

I just remembered that there are some quick tid bits of explanation on this tut as well so you might want to check it out…

Tt will likely echo the process i describe above so check if if I did not make it clear…this way I won’t have to write a book and bore you.

cheers.
