I saw it mentioned that Giorgio Luciano had posted an updated Max file with book textures, among other things. In looking at the thread which collects old Challenge files, the .OBJ seemed both without materials and I see a strange artifact in the walls (see attached image) in any 3D application that I’ve tried thus far.

Might anyone know if a more recent version of that Challenge file - or the Max file I believe was mentioned - that @jojo1975 uploaded happens to be available, please?

Hello ! I’ve searched in my archive but unfortunatly I got only the objs file and I cannot find the max file. If anyone has it I will be glad to add it in the vault. Thanks for letting me know.

Hello ! and thanks for posting. I think the image looks very good. I will try indeed some variations. As an example, adding a volumetric light from the windows and also a night take illuminating the room using the lamp and moonlight. Those are for sure great exercise! Please share your results!

There is an OBJ and Reference package for this challenge; I’ve personally never seen the MAX version.

Keep in mind that when importing OBJ scenes:

• they require cleanup of vertices
• normals need to be verified
• it may be necessary to ungroup the model to remove undesired geometry
• uv’s may require cleanup
• scaling of the model to ensure accurate lighting energy may be required

HI ALL !

I am gonna give an attempt to the CGTALK lighting challenge #8 : Haunted Hallway. This challenge is a bit old but it’s never too late to do it.
My goal for this lighting challenge is to train myself with the latest version of Maya (2019), to get my skills updated with Arnold renderer & Substance Painter.
That’s why i have choosen this scene. It’s not too heavy with polygons and objects. I don’t want to spend too much time with many objects to texture.

I want to focus on lighting mood and shading & texturing in order to improve my skills with Arnold.

Please find below the two first renders.

I have made for now simple texturing with basics textures just to get kind of a mood I want for this « Haunted » scene. Also render settings are not highest yet.

I rendered AOVs with Arnold and I did compositing in Nuke. Not a complicated flow for now but it allows me to tweak some passes like I want.

I can now focus on texturing to get something with more variations, dirts, rust, …

Hi !

A little update i wanted to share with you before going to work on texturing with Substance Painter.

I added/modified some extra meshes in the scene to populate a bit more and refined some lights, especially flashlight on floor.

This is my first take on the lighting challenges 34 – Interior scene. Modeled by Giorgio Luciano.
I used Maya Software Renderer and Maya basic shaders for this. I strictly followed the reference photo as my goal was to create a god looking render with Maya Software render.
I had a lot of fun doing this one. I learned new things, experimented quite a lot, and developed my own tricks too! It was awesome all-nighters!
I used raytracing for Maya software render and although the result is fine, the render time isn’t worth it. I think using depth map shadows and completely fake reflection will be time effective. Gotta try that some other day.
I am hoping to take this challenge on Redshift again. Yaay!!
