Feature request: Transform based on a pivot

#1

Hi, Im not sure if anyone mentioned this already but I think it would be very useful if in addition to selecting a custom vector to (eg) rotate by, also picking a point or average position of a number of subobjects as the pivot to rotate by. Also can be used for other transformations such as scaling etc. Could be part of the advanced menus.

If you think its a good idea, i’d appreciate someone who is reg’d at the official board to pass the suggestion on for me.

Thanks.

ahh, sorry! I didnt realise you could already do this! :PP Please ignore this

actually i would like to know how to do that… but on the feature request side, I wouldnt mind being able to group objects together, or import .wings files instead of exporting/importing obj

<< know how to do that >>
First, you need to enable advanced menus (via prefs, Adv) if not already on.
Using Rotate as above as an ex.
Select geom
Choose Rotate with rmb (or mmb, note info line contents) - rmb for just defining a (rotation) axis, mmb if you want that axis to pass thro’ a specific location.
Select an edge (say) and execute op - selected geom will now rotate around this edge.

Similar procedure for all ops that support these options - more info about vector behaviour on the aardvarks’ vector page, if interested.

Note that all of this sort of stuff can be done using magnets as well - check info line for details, as options vary depending on camera mode being used - but for Mirai mode, you just hold Alt key.

Group - select objects, Object > Combine (use Separate to well, … separate  ) - but note that wings doesn’t keep object names thro’ this procedure.

Far better off (imo) if you want to rotate a ‘group’ of objects:
Select objects but don’t group and do a rmb (mmb) rotate - this’ll keep names.

Why do you do that?

Try the Top menu File/Merge command is that what you want?
