Fat Ogre

#1

Hi,
I havn’t painted in quite a while, but I am looking to get a portfolio together so any help to improve would be appreciated. This image is an ogre type character. I wanted to keep him quite human looking, but still quite ugly. Any comments are very welcome.

Really good start!

It will be interesting to watch him develop. More, please!

Hi

I havn’t really had a lot of time for this painting so here’s a quick update… I feel that i’m strugglling with this one, can any one give any tips on lighting etc (are the legs to short?). I’m wanting to eventually put a bit of hair over him on his arms etc when i get into more detail.

Thanks

My only suggestion would be for you to stop putzing with it daub by daub.

Paint the entire body’s base flesh color. All of it. With hard edged, clean outline, no blurry.
Then paint your basic shadows, it’s okay if they are a bit soft edged.
Then paint your basic highlights, same thing.
THEN futz with it and tweak it and play with it until the cows come home.

You’re just spending far too much time on detailing when you don’t have a solid enough foundation underneath. Working on his face is kind of useless when he still doesn’t have any feet…Hard to say if his legs are too short. IF you don’t put feet on him, your canvas is too short, that’s for sure.

Just my opinion…

I’m agree with CybrGfx’s advices as usual

-I just want to add my opinion because your work has the same problem than in this thread by VISEone, you need to consider the whole shape as if it was simplified. Once the simplified lighting is done (fig.2) you can start to increase progressively details like in the third and fourth figure.
(First figure is what you have done for now, the same use of the same gradient for everything)

-About color samples you have used…well, i think it limits yourself in the choice of color than anything else.
I have made a video paint over of your work, you can see here (800x600 - time x2 - 16min29 - 46,9MB):
BUT, be careful if you decide to view it, it is 33 minutes in real time and it is a lot more detailed on the head than an usual paint over. I mean viewing it will probably kill your motivation as it can give a precise idea of a finished work.
Now I used a really sharp brush painting on the whole character and the brush left many artifacts in a first time to show you it is not a problem for this kind of character (no perfect baby skin).
I have made this video also to show you I will never limit my colors with something established at the start. You can see also the heavy use of color picker…

At 16 minutes I have tried the use of a screen composite layer to show you a quick undead color~ just for the fun.
I wish this little “tutorial” will help you…

I re-started this one using a harder brush and a different colour scheme. I think i am progressing but still not quite there. The legs need a lot of work, but i’m happier with how this one is going. I’ve learnt I need to go and study form and tone, looking at real life people before making them from my head, this obviously will make things a lot easier.

a real big thankyou for the video tutorial (I hope you can see I’ve learnt from it)

I promise i won’t post now until i’ve made more progress on the picture (instead of small updates.)

Looking good!

NICE balance on the legs with the body. Good feet.
Glad you’ve learned some new things, and are getting more comfortable with the idea of progressive posts.

It’s all a journey, and you learn with every step…

Looking forward to your next progressive update!

Hecartha again :buttrock:
Yes, I had/have the same problem - I saw each part as a single object and forgot about the global shading. Since Hecartha showed me how to look at this different it helped me a lot.

Your new start looks promising and I’m looking forward to see it develope.

Right…

I’ve put the ogre on hold for the moment. I’m going to concentrate on drawing from life to help me progress. I’m not going to spend a massive amount of time on each drawing, more speed paints. I will use this thread to show my progress.

My first one took nearly 3 hours, i’m going to leave it where it is and move onto the next. (He is really pale, so wanted to keep that in the painting)
Thanks
