Fantasy Cityscape WIP

#1

Hi everyone! First-time poster here

I’m currently working on a semi-photorealistic graphic novel, and this is (or will be) one of the location sets.
What I have in mind is a sort of Renaissance-style town, but fairly clean and with magic-powered lighting that resembles electricity. For the first shot I want deep twilight - with fog, street lamps and aircraft… um, airbeast navigation lights - but, since the set will get used in different scenes, I try out different lighting as I go along.

I mostly work with Blender Internal Engine, though some elements will have to be done in Cycles and I expect to be doing some compositing in Gimp as well.

Here is the beginning of the project. Figuring out composition of the establishing shot, playing with colour scheme, trying to figure out the general layout of the city. Any comments much appreciated!

The only comment i can give you is to figure out what the setting is going to be. Sofar we see that you have two, one that focuses on island castle, and one that (even if not intended) focuses on building with windows in the middle.
Imho that’s too few “sketches”. you should make a lot more and they all must be somehow different to pick the best one. Currently they both are ok, since you didn’t provide of any information on what you are aiming to achieve in the picture. Give us a little bit of backstory for the picture like: I’m trying to portrait the house of weathy merchant, well, then maybe number 2 is more merchant’y; I’m trying to portrait the house of rich old man that lives in solitude, then number 1 is the pick.
As I mentioned they are both currently ok’ish.

Thank you for your comment! Well noted about shots focusing on different buildings.
See, the plan is to model a city that I can then use for different shots. So, the castle on the island is the cityhall, and the image focusing on it would be more of an establishing shot - “ok, we’re in this city now”. Whereas the house is where the plot is mostly happening, so I’d use it for establishing shot of the concrete location. I will also eventualy have street scenes, too, and another house elsewhere in the city.
You’re right, though, I’ll label them more clearly next time!

I worked on the Noble House some more. Played with textures, added doors/windows (although window glass will definitely need more work). I also added a human silhouette, for scale.

Worked some more on the city hall and the island. Also, added low-poly trees.
