Fallen_ VFX & Creature Develp

#1

Fallen is the title of my VFS VFX piece. Its been molding in a corner for some time and its long overdue … I set it aside as I started learning zbrush and fiddling with muscle tk at the end of the course. On the two pieces you will see two diferent stages of my character.

Thanks to Sean my VFS buddy who did a great job as an actor!

By the way ... if you enjoy any of this and are looking to hire ... well ... look at me! hehe

Oh and feel free to critic! Cheers

P.S. “Charct_Present” link is my model update. And “Fallen” link is my VFX piece.

Nice man, love the sound design, the set extensions were very convincing aswell, i thought the creature was a little to aerobatic, other than that, it was great.

#3

Main sound edit was done by Brett Anthony and Andrew Kalmbach from VFS … I did the final edit and remixed things a bit afterwards.

Yeah … I agree on the creature bit … I almost just got rid of it and was going to wait to add the new creature and make a completly diferent shot … but then I woudn’t have anything to show now hehe.

Finally…Floyd…to see your piece, it looks great, pretty sure you put a lot of effort on it…goo dluck with job hunting~

#5

Tidy effort all round there Floyd

#6

hey floyd, job well done. you already know what i think about it so there’s no need to go over it again.

#7

Floyd - great job. it’s good to see you’re work. nice website too!!! great muscles. all the work paid off…indeed. where are you these days? still in vancouver?

Hey I really enjoyed that even though it’s a very short short

Also nice to see something of a darker nature coming from VFS. A bit of a Chris Cunningham feel at times. The compositing looks really good, although I must admit I’m easily impressed when it comes to that.

I noticed that you used muscleTk for the character. I did not notice too much muscular behaviour (which can be a good thing as well of course). How did you like the plug-in. Was it definately worth using or would normal smooth skinning with the more standard rigging tools have done the same inthe end? Was it easy to apply?

I liked the breakdowns and charcater setups as well, but would have loved to see more of it. It went a bit fast at times.

Anyhow: well done!

Thanks for the coments you guys!! I realy apreciate it.

WoW … Lots of questions demand lots of answers, hope your up to it Corny, here we go:

That coment is right on the money. My main inspiration … was Chris Cunningham’s video clip “Come to Daddy”.

There are 2 reasons why your not seeing a lot of muscle action:

 1. he’s not doing anything extreme where you can realy notice the movement and
 2. Maybe toned down the muscle jiggle influence more than I should have. The jiggle is just the maya default jiggle that I applied to the muscle nurbs objs. I made a jiggle wheight map for each muscle.

I think its ok. Dont use the dynamic skinning opiton though. Its just for show. I also had problems with scaling once the muscles where all set up.

I still need to do some more testing. I wouldn’t make a muscle system like this one anymore … Too many muscles makes it a bit heavy to deal with and a lot more problems to solve. I’m sure you can reach the same result with just a few muscles representing a whole group. Thats why next time I’ll try to use the “action line” option. This allows you to mold a nurbs surface representing an area of muscles. If that doesn’t go well then I just probably wont use it.

MTK does help with weighting but its not a magical tool that will solve all your smooth skinning issues. If your smooth skining is off … its still going to afect your final result.

In my case I’m not sure if it was the best choice. Specialy because my mesh was heavier than it should be. I believe there are many ways I could’ve gone about doing things and maybe I could’ve had better results … but I wont know for sure till I try something different. This is still my first character. Got a move on!
