Extrude profile

#1

Easy question but I can’t find the answer. I have made a 2D profile PS. I want to extrude this along one axis in modo. How can I do this?
Thanks,
Graeme

The extrude tool should do the trick, look in the mesh edit tab.

I tried that first but it doesn’t seem to work. I also tried Smooth Shift in the polygon menu which works but things get very ugly if I try to smooth or subdivide.
Thanks,

Extrude tool works fine either with curves or polygons (including 2 point polys ), but only in polygon mode! If you will try it in edge or vertex mode it will do nothing.

You are absolutely right! Thanks! Still have the same issues when I try to smooth or subdivide … the polys go a bit crazy… but I guess that’s the trade-off.
Thanks,

just a few minutes before i also had a problem with extruded polys. after switching to subd mode they looked strange.
A friend said that he had similar “problems” in lightwave. The “problem” was just that the polys are in wrong direction. try to flip the polys with “f” and maybe it works for you too.

This was initially a problem and then I read in another post about back facing polys and the way to avoid/minimize them was to construct the curve in a counter-clockwise direction. This seems to work.

I had a close look at the mesh created after extruding the curve and found that the curve profile is actually just one polygon (n-gon?) but the extrusion’s geometry doesn’t mesh with the curve edge exactly - there are lots of very tiny gaps (more n-gons?). I think this might be the problem as to why, when the model is subdivided, things go awry. I’ve also tried converting these tiny gaps to polygons without much success which seemed a bit strange. The initial curve was an n-gon and modo turned that into a poly no problems, why can’t it turn these smaller n-gons into polys too?

I guess the moral of the story is that this method of modeling is quick, but dirty and is suitable for only some applications.
Thanks,
Graeme

Maybe I am comparing like with like.
My issue is this then I extrude a square polygon, into a box the back of the box has no polygon.

I am using the mesh edit extrude tool on a single sided flat polygon.

Any words of wisdom please.

Nigel,

Did you ever get a solution for this…it seems so simple but I’m kind of lost on this one…I have a simple flat poly and I want to extrude it…without ending up with the back face missing…boy I never thought I’d be posting a question like this after more than eight years modelling!!!

How do I extrude? LOL!

Hey there,

Yes if I extrude the polygon ( X ), instead of beveling it out.
Most of the confusion comes when I start comparing like with like.

Hi, to keep your extruded poly choose “thick” mode in the tool properties.

LOL!

Thanks 5Alive…that’s the ticket…and a great way to use your first post!
