As far as the trail the vacuum leaves I would look into the ‘Echo’ effect in after effects.

I would definately use after effects. make a mask that goes in 30-40 different directions and animate on a stroke. Roughen up the stroke with any number of plugins, colorize it.
Experiment with how thick you want to make the stroke.
another thougth might be to animate the little vacuum robot,
put a camera under or above the floor and render out frames of the
robot.
then use the frames as the floor texture map set to overlay so
that every frame, once shown, stays on.
I’m not sure exactly how the texture control would work off the top of
my head, but I bet one could achieve the effect that way…
