A very cool concept, Nathaniel:scream:
Gorgeous work, Nathaniel! I’t’s not quite representing the book for me yet, so I look forward to seeing what other elements you add… or to see you bring this mood to yuor other sketches. It’s very placid. This piece alone is so evocative, part of me wants to NOT see you ruin it by adding anything else, just set it aside, and call it done (as a piece by itself, not as a challenge entry.)
Anyhow, looking forward to seeing more!
wow, there is some VERY promising stuff coming! Love your style and designs!
nice Atmosphere…another great work .Hi, Im Rian. nice to know u ,from my point of view , i found that the composition a little bit out, make it longer a bit may can help, i guess u love a lot realistic kind of texture, c u .
This is another great sketches…But you shuould start detailed works asap… The last one is my best…
sorry for my terrible eng…
Nathaniel - amazing mood you’ve got there. Absolutely great work.
Thank you everyone for the kind comments! I definitely think I will explore more options based on the lighting of my last post. I may try a different version of it, or apply it to the previous city shots. More to come soon…
It’s a great piece already. I like the mood and atmospheric feeling already evident. I was wondering, as a relative digital newbie, what type of media you use to achieve that look. Is it layers used with textures, or is it within the program itself? Just curious. Good luck.
Thanks for the nice words Dragginart! I primarily in photoshop. I usually work on one or two layers, and I use transparent texturing and/or photos to add additional depth to the artwork. I would suggest playing with brushes, different brush modes, photos, etc., to see what techniques work best for you. I hope this helps a little, but if you have more questions, please feel free to let me know! I’m always glad to offer any advice. Thanks again, and good luck in the challenge. Your thread is coming along nicely!

Great shiop design, I always like to createmachines with insectoid origins.
Great ship design, I always like to createmachines with insectoid origins.
OMG!!! whats taking u soo long update that image! i want 2 c update is one of my favorites in the contest
Edit: Forgot, what program do you use? Photoshop or Corel? and if Photoshop… are they custom brushes?
Thanks for the kind words everyone!
ICHOMA - Thanks! It’s nice to hear from you again!
Waldoerick - Thank you! I have been so so busy with other things that I haven’t had a chance to get to the challenge. I’m hoping to get some time to really start working on this one very soon. I’ve got some new things in mind, and I’ll be posting them up as soon as I can. As for the program I use, I’m working with Photoshop only, and I use some custom brushes and photo textures as well. Thanks again!
Excelente lighting, it develope a very special modd, Calm and Natural.
About the key elements, I think you can complete the scene with a distant City or may be you can dreo the entrance to the asteroid, of course from the inside, cause I think nobody has done it yet.
Here’s a rough model to get me set in the right direction and for basic perspective reference. Things will probably change or move on this model, as I will rearrange things as the painting evolves.
Okay, I’m off to begin the coloring!
Here’s my first pass at color. I’m just letting things flow and feeling for the mood of the piece. I’m not concerned with details just yet, but mostly just the ligthing and the value structure to base the details on. Any comments are always welcome!
