Enthousiastic "hi!" from Reinier

Just joined the cgsociety… And i immediately feel at home here :P.
So much that I feel the urge to tell a little something about me.

I’m from the Netherlands and live in Rheden at the moment (a small town near the city of Arnhem.)

I started drawing some stuff about 5 or 6 years ago, but it was some time later when i got in touch with 3d software and photoshop that i got more and more excited about the possibilities. I joined the Grafisch Lyceum in Utrecht which is a graphic school… kinda. They did not learn me anything apart from some technical stuff here and there. But i could not be bothered about it in the beginning… i just bought books and learned as much as possible at home. (Oewf how i fondly remember those first weeks. Sitting behind my computer with those books and doodling the night away.)

Anyway. After 3 years i was pretty sick and tired of that school and left. Hoping i could assemble a portfolio pretty quick i set out to make my first serious 3d piece… A technical one featuring a steam locomotive which earned me the CGChoice Award ;).

Then i got into some money problems and had to cancel work on the rest of my portfolio. I did some freelance stuff which totally burned me out. At that time i could not set limits on myself and i would easily work from early in the morning to very late in to the night. Because of that i had not much free time to work on personal stuff but now i learned to work more efficient. (Much healthier and now i have time for improving my skills…)

At the moment i’m focusing on character design as that is one of the areas which need improving. I hope to have some WIP’s to show off soon!

Currently i’m looking for work at other companies as i want to drop the freelance work for awhile and get more experience before i go back to that ballgame.(if i still want that by then i dont know) I would love to work within a team.

I joined cgtalk almost 2 years ago and still enjoy it every single day… Thank you all for that

Hey, nice story Reinier. I often heard the same thing about the Grafisch Lyceum, or Kunstacademie (Art School) for that matter, from people who intended to do something 3D related. Yes, if you want to do a 3D education then you should not look for an education in The Netherlands, simple as that. You could learn more from studying at home, as you’ve experienced.

Look at Wiro’s character modeling tutorial if you haven’t already, it’s really good with some excellent tips.

And feel free to join our little adventures in the ridiculously large bonanza of commentaries thread.

I hope you find your way, good luck!
