Enchanted Forest - Environment - Julian Warren

#1

Hi folks,

I saw the challenge a while back and have been working on it for a couple of weeks now… and have decided its got the the point where I’m happy to post it.

As yet its not looking as “Enchanted” as it might, but it’s still a work in progress.

I’d really appreciate any of your comments/advice,

cheers,

JW.

I’d say get some more light on the forrest in the background of your picture. At first I didn’t even see it.

Grass looks good

Tree stump looks good.

Could we get a close-up of the guy in the flying contraption? Also, could you maybe give a little story/concept info about this picture?

Hi,

I have to confess the reason there isn’t much light on the background forest is because it consists of one tree and a plane with a procedural texture on it…

I’ve been working on the little chap in his autogyro (a precursor to the helicopter which has a free moving rotor blade and a propeller for drive). He’s probably going to come forward in the composition (although it will cause problems with the DoF). Here’s what he looks like close up at the moment:

The original plan for the scene was much as it looks now, without the autogyro, and with a volumetric light streaming in from the top right. That was before I found out that Sasquatch Lite doesn’t get on well with volumetric effects (hypervoxels transparent and reflective surfaces are a no no as well).

In the next couple of days I’m planning on giveing the pilot some clothes and a hat/hair, adding some assorted plants and flowers to the clearing, a spiral staircase down from the stump, and probably a little ‘H’ helipad marking on top of the stump. I’m also probably going to add a few glowing HV effects dotted around in the air (above the line where the grass cuts out) to add to the enchantment.

thanks for your interest,

JW.

Um…you do realize the challenge ends in 4 days right? That sounds like a lot of work to do in that ammount of time. :hmm:

Hi again,

yup, I had kinda realised just how near the challenge is to its end…

So far I’ve added a few ferns to the background, upped the light a bit, and given the pilot some rather rough and ready clothes (I’m not planning on the camera getting that close!)

To be honest with you I won’t be desperately disappointed if it isn’t perfect by the deadline, I’ll probably keep working on it afterwards. The main thing I’m after is some good feedback on what people think of it, and what I can do to improve it (HINT HINT  )

I’ll probably post another update tommorow (if going to a wedding doesn’t eat into my LW time too much  - not my wedding I’m not that obsessed).

cheers,

JW.

sounds good. I look forward to the new pic.

Hi,

latest update, still not all there yet, but getting there. I’ve tried to work around the problem with volumetric lighting and Sasquatch Lite, which has caused an odd halo around the autogyro, but is probably an improvement.

I’ve still got some plants in the works, and I’ll be throwing the markings on top of the tree stump, and thats probably going to be about it for the challenge. I’ll probably also go for a slightly more complicated work around to avoid the halo in the final render.

cheers,

JW.

This piece gets better with each new pic. Keep it up and you’ll have a really great piece. Nice work so far.

Well this is probably going to be it… there’s a few odds and ends I’d like to do a bit more to, but I have a feeling that will always be the case!

It’s really just the flowers added and the ‘heli’-pad texture added, with the halo around the autogyro gone.

cheers,

JW.

hehehe :applause: luv that heli pad thing u got going there

how is 1 2 vote in this challenge ??? 2 many top images around

Yep - the whole Helipad is really nice! (I especially like the windsock - great touch)

The grass looks good and the little flowers are excellent.

The only thing that would improve this to me would be to blur the little flass and his copter less so we can see more of the detail… but each to his own!
