emit_direct_photons of mia_portal_light, on or off?

I plug the mia_portal_light in the light shader and photon emitter of a area light at a window. I’ve turn off all the lights, including sun/sky light. But the batch bake result shows that the room is still lit up a little bit, looks like the area light itself emit some lights.

How can I make the area light/ portal light only bring outside sun/sky light into the room, and do not emit lights by itself? Should I turn on the emit_direct_photons? I don’t want the area light act like a light itself.

Without seeing your scene or rendering, I think you may be setting up your light in a weird way? Portal Lights are the way to go, sure, and I use them in all my interior renderings. Almost always I use them with Photons as well.

In the area light under mental ray > area light, have you enabled “Use light shape” ?
