EIM SDS Wishlist

#1

As I sit here rushing to finish a job in EIM today… I thought I would start a thread specifically to features "desired in EIM’s Ubers/SDS.

1: Mirror points to view… I would like to select points in a 2d view, and have the point positions mirrored based on the view axis. So, simply put, if I grab 2 points in a view window which are on opposite sides of the views view plane, they would both have the same 2d view position.

2: Deforms… I would love to be working in Ubers and be able to apply deforms to the selected cage points.
Standards: Taper,twist,bend, skew, etc
nice to have: Smooth, softmove, push, pull, pinch, noise, etc.

3:Selection sets… I would like to have unique cage selection sets. I could then easily edit certain points in a selection set without having to deal with the other points. A good example of the issue is bending an arm and having overlapping points.

more to come…

4: Align points to spline… this is a little esoteric, but would be nice to grab a string of cage points, and be able to have them follow a spline, as opposed to editing them individually… This could also be defined as a 2d smooth operation.

5: The ability to toggle the visibility of other objects while working with SDS. Would be nice to have the ability to have other objects be cycled through solid/wireframe/hidden while working in SDS. I know I can go into the project window and turn off the visibility, this would just be a shortcut. If it is a feature already, I apologize.

nothing to do with SDS modeling, but the GPU powered SDS is amazing…

The guy who made that possible is awesome. Check out what else he’s been involved in.
Perhaps his papers could be useful to EI. Better yet, hire him!

Amazing body of work from this young genious. Could be amazing if some of his concepts could be used in EiAS. Who knows?..

That is some great stuff… kinda like a glimpse into the future of point manipulation… really cool…

Is there a way to have EIM attach the .eim automatically to a file when saving? If not, would be nice to have.

6: Scroll zoom… I am so accustomed to using it in other apps…

It’s been mentioned before, but no harm in repeating, any SDS tools inside of EIM should reflect state of the art in Polygon Modeling. There should be a Cut Tool, Knife Tool, Ring and Loop Selections, the ability to ‘walk’ your selection up and down your loops, etc.

It would be handy to ‘draw’ out individual splines, and snap those lines to reference geometry, thus allowing ‘retopologizing’ a la’ Silo.

Inset Scale, Beveling Loops and Edges, Soft Selection or Magnets for moving Vertices, Paint Sculpting (which Amorphium had years ago), Lattice Deforms.

Really just an EI version of Silo’s tools would be fine.

And fix the isometric camera view, replace it with a true perspective 3D view! Please.

As long as EIM keeps EIAS’ style of view orbiting (instead of Modo and ViaCAD’s virtual trackball one), it would be nice to have both perspective and orthographic views. I would add to that more inmediate means of changing view parameters (normals, curve direction and other cues’ visibility options currently all too buried inside the App’s Preferences) plus some new utility draw levels: semitransparent, reflection mapped, etc.).

7: When moving points… holding shift to lock to the view windows plane’s axis…
This is probably contriversial, but I have grown used to holding shift to limit movement to 90deg on the visible plane. Could exist as another key command, so please excuse me if I havent discovered it.
