editing lowres mesh

#1

1)I am having problems with the smooth proxy function. is there a way for me to have the smoothed version of the mesh in another layer that gets updated everytime I edit the lowres mesh?

it seems to go haywire the way that I am doing it. basically I have half the mesh modeled I then do smooth proxy with the full mirror function. and select the smoothed version and put it on a seperate layer. ideally I would like to be able to flip this layer on or off to check the progress of my modeling.

  1. if I add vertices pieces of the smoothed mesh get their normals flipped. I tried all the different normal options in the edit poly menu but it doesnt seem to fix the problem. any ideas?

  2. another problem i am having is when using the sculptmesh function on the lowres mesh it does even stranger things to the smoothmesh. I will upload a picture later but basically it stretched the skin all to hell.

  3. also is there a way to use the sculpt mesh function on a mirrored half and have the border edges maintain their position on the plane of symetry?

I really like the idea of the mirror plane but I am getting other problems with that… the mirrored half just seems to have bad results with the normals not being smoothed and the polys that are on the plane of symtry seem to get lost.

I have tried all sorts of things and different combinations but am not satisfied yet.

has anyone had any luck with using the mirror plane then having a smooth proxy above that? or have any similar ideas.

I have had maya7 unlimited for about a week now and am in love… It is so much deeper than any other program I have ever used. so pardon my newbieness but I have many more questions where that came from

ok 3 more quick questions hehe sorry…

5)is there a way to do a loopcut( split a mesh into two along an edge loop)
6)is there a way to do an edgeslide(have an edge move along its adjacent edges)
7)is there a way to move edgesverts and faces along their normal? similar to the sculpt funciton but when in component mode…

ok sorry for all the questions but if anyone answers any of these questions it will make my day

ok well here is an image of what happened to the smooth mesh when i edited the lowresmesh. I think it was from the sculptmesh function but not sure… anyone seen this before. anyway i found that I could fix it be deleting the smoothmesh and resmoothing it. is this necesarry? any way it isnt what I expected but its cool in its own way

also I am doin some preliminary skin tests with misss fast skin. I am using a perlin noise in the bumb channel connectd with a bumb2d node. I plan on uvmapping this eventually once I figure that part out but is there a good way to conform the uvs so I dont get this stretching around the eyes?

I have been looking into a few melscripts for extra polyediting abilitys. Im having trouble finding any that work well on osx. any suggestions… anyway here is an update of the model I was working on… I am in love with the artisan tools by the way. but if any pros could answer those questions it would be cool. I found that I can move vertices along their normal but not edges and faces, is this true?

ahwell peace
