Easily Editing Skin Joints on a Smooth Mesh?

Hey everybody.

So I am trying to set up a mouth rig using joints, and i obviously want to have a smooth renderable mesh. How would i go about smoothing my mesh so it is in a renderable state (ei not smooth mesh preview), but also be able to go back and edit my skin joints without having to deal with an overly large amount of polygons?

Hopefully that descripes my issue clearly enough, thanks in advance!

If you have modelled using polygon, apply a polySmooth and increase the division for render.
