Hi all. Looks like I’m entering the dominance war. Hooray!

I've persuaded myself to give some character modelling a shot, and figure this competition is a good way to give myself a deadline to work to. I tend to run scared from anything remotely anatomical, so please bear with my abysmal character sketching skills as I attempt to transfer my thoughts to paper :scream:. I promise they'll look better once I start modelling!

I've really got no idea what sort of character I'm aiming for. I'm a sci-fi fan, so perhaps a cyborg. We shall see.

… and a first concept. I’m thinking of a samurai/swords/assassin kind of thing, but in cyborg form. Doesn’t really have much impact though.

edit : a few more doodles.

#3

Here’s another couple of sketches for a different character. I’m now leaning more towards a norm/invoker sort of thing. I’d quite like to convey the sense that the character’s been around for a while and seen a few battles, but it came out looking a bit too much like a pirate I think. She also needs a better staff.

Ah well, never mind, I’m still feeling happier about the direction.

#4

i like the beat up look you’re going for. does the one on the left only have one arm because that would definitely make him a bad a$$. maybe instead of an eye patch you can go with a big piece of cloth or even a half mask (like phantom of the opera). anyhow keep it up!

#5

Cheers for the comment. I think I’m going to keep heading in this direction, I quite like the idea of a character who’s seen a few battles (and lost a few, too). This one’s slightly more dapper, but I quite like it. The colours aren’t final (obviously - they’ll be red at the very least), they’re just what I ended up painting in.

I’m still not sure about the eyepatch/bit of fabric thing. It almost looks as though he’s blindfolded (although anyone fighting demons with a blindfold would be seriously awesome)

#6

Like your sketch, the eyepatch is cool, I agree with the beaten up look too. Keep going and good luck

#7

Couple more sketches. I’ve gone back to the eye-patch because it’s much more recognisable, even if it does look a bit much like a pirate. The top image here would be a cyborg character, whilst the bottom could be a healer - I imagine some kind of spell being conjured in his hands.

I’ve had a pretty busy couple of weeks sorting out stuff in the “real” world, and haven’t got nearly as much done on this as I’d hoped. Here’s an hour or so starting modelling, and a quick over-draw to show some clothes. It’s mostly just the shape/form I’m looking at at the moment - they’ll still be all dirty and beaten up.

Hello

there. Thought a Blenderer could use some help. The idea looks promising. Because of the outfit he looks a bit like a stalker to me, what would fit with his swordlike weapon and his eyepatch. I like this energy-lines surrounding him in the post from the 30 march.
For your model, i think that a proper silhouette is really important, so i give you the advice to break your model a bit, f.e. with belts or folds. He looks a bit to smooth right now.
Hang on.

Thanks for the comment, darkBlueArt. I’ve been working on the rough 3D model, and whilst it’s hard to tell with so few polys, I think I’ve managed to break up the outline enough to add a bit of interest.

There are two similar versions - one male, one female - I’m not sure which I like better.

#11

Hello

as long as you keep the idea with the eye-patch and the artificial leg, i would like to see a female version. As the contrast between such massive injuresand a beautiful woman is greater than between a man. So this could make your character more interesting and a bit deeper in story.

The wrist looks quite good. Looking forward to see the full model and textures.

Thanks for the comment, DarkBlueArt. I agree with you, if I manage to get the contrast right, a female version could work well.

Here’s a start on the head. It took a bit longer than expected, so I’ll move onto the body tomorrow and come back to finish it, I think. There’s only a week (ish) left in the competition, so I’d better get a move on if I want to have anything to show!

#13

Making progress on the 10k tri mesh, slowly. I’m hoping to have it finished by the end of the weekend, UV unwrapping by tuesday, and spend the rest of the week and final weekend doing textures and adding high res detail.

#14

So here’s the rest of the model. There’s still a bit of the head left to go, and a lot of tweaking I want to do (as well as setting up the pose). I’ll finish the head and move on to UVing now, I just don’t have the time to throw at this project

#15

Here’s the final pose for the character. I can’t seem to get it looking quite realistic, any pointers would be much appreciated. All UV unwrapping is done, just got to start the textures now …

#16

Thank goodness for the time extension, I wouldn’t have had a hope of finishing otherwise. I spent most of the weekend sculpting, then had a few issues with blender and ended up with most of the detail unusable :frowning:

So to get my spirits up again I started texturing. The face is still a bit wonky (especially the mouth), and I’ve got to fix up a few bits of the UV maps around the waist, but at least it’s progress.

#17

I’ve been slowly tapping away at this, texture painting not being my forte at all. There’s still a lot to go, (and so little time! thank goodness for that deadline extension), but here’s a preview of where I’m up to.

Things still to do :
Scars/patches/detail on the jacket & skin.
Tweak face to look a bit better.
Spell/cast effect.
Hair!
Podium,
Lighting.

eek:scream:

#18

A few more pretty pictures. 1 day left, if my calculations are correct!

-hair is done
-patches are done
-tweaked the face, but it still looks weird. I give up.

#19

Well, I’m finished!

Just managed to pull everything together in the end, although I didn’t manage to finish some of the things I would have liked to have done. Still, this is the first CGTalk challenge I’ve managed to finish, so I’m feeling pretty happy with the achievement.

Best of luck to everyone who’s entered.
