Ok these are the latest ones,… didnt make it but had a great time! Thanks to all the contributing artists and organizers.
Pulled out the ribs, rounded the calves a bit and tried to make the face more sympathetic I like the helmet sculpt and I think I will continue the theme through the costume. Also I think it will be great fun to hit a 10,000 tri limit for the low poly version.
Aha, cool!
Nice general form and concept. I also think that her lower ribs part looks a bit too narrow. I think you overdone the muscles, especially the torso. And as it’s a female she would look nicer if some muscles would be less pronounced (the second iteration looks quite enough for me in terms of details). Maybe I would left hte hips muscles as anyway they are mostly hidden under the clothing.
The model needs a heel base, but I guess you will add this as I can see it on your sketch.
The sketch face looks more interesting for now, more characteristic.
The lower leg part (the double-sided muscle) from the back now looks a bit flat and yet I didn’t see even in bodybuilders that it would be much pronounced, i.e separated with a line between them, so I sould make it softer and rounder.
I would add the piece on her helmet like spartans have (going on the forehead and even on nose, or at least at forehead), would make her more severe, but that’s just me, so you bettee know what she needs.
Interesting to see the update, keep going!
Hey thanx Alexander!
Man you always come with good comments! I am thankfull for all the pointers. Yes I have to make the face more sympathetic somehow. The figure is pretty extreme. I suppose I like to do that because I find anatomy interesting, and there seems to be alot of those soft maidens out there. I wanted this one to be a real killer :).
Hi Vanessa.
Thanks very much for your comment
I used 3dmax to make the base mesh and then zbrush to sculpt it. I will use Modo for the uvs and later max to rig and pose the model. The textures will be done in zbrush and reworked in photoshop and the normal maps and any occlusion maps will be made in xnormal.
Wow, very interesting. What do you like about using Zbrush? Is it easier than Mudbox? I’ve never used either and I’m about to get a student version of 3DS max with Mudbox. I was wondering what someone like yourself who’s had a lot of experience and success with 3-D work can give as advice to someone who’s aspiring to get to your level. Looking forward to reading your response!
I use zbrush because I bought it way back in 2004, also because I have an old computer (changing as from today hoorah!) and zbrush is way faster on a poor system than mudbox. Even on a quicker laptop with twice the memory and a faster cpu plus a better graphics card Mudbox runs pretty slowly for me. Many users find Mudbox has a simpler interface. I guess it comes down to what you get used to. Zbrush is however a big player in the films and games industry. Also every update of zbrush has been free as are all the plugins and add ons that pixologic constantly comes up with

Thanks for the supposition that I am successful, that’s nice. Truth is I have never really had any success with 3d,… as yet. What I have done is quite a few comissions as a freelancer that have paid poorly with deadlines too tight and budgets too low. Also the work itself has been quite unexciting and low key. Mostly the hardest job was to get clients to pay for what they ordered and used. I do believe however that a high quality port folio and good contacts are essential to success, so I have geared my life around increasing the quality of my output. By doing that I hope to attract better clients and more exciting work.
After having read this you might not want to take my advice, but I pay the rent by teaching 3d and drawing so I have a higher than average insight into learning the subject. Also I am busy teaching myself and have noticed a few things along the way. The best clues I can give you are:
Mhmm, that’s pretty interesting to consider. Hopefully Mudbox will run okay on my comp considering it’s a platform. I think I might pick up Zbrush in the future for those nifty plugins.

I’m sorry to hear you’ve had some trouble I don’t think though the amount of work you receive is as important as the quality you put into it, and judging from your skins, you seem to put quite a lot of time and detail in your work, and for that, I can’t help but respect that, as I would probably take the same road. I think it helps, as a student, to hear this now before I dip my toes too deep in the pond and get surprised my feet get wet. I think if you continue working and creating scenes, you should be able to get tons of work. Have you created Landscapes before in 3d? I’d love to see you put your characters in a scene! Good luck on your work, and I hope to see you’re future portfolio pieces in here!

Oh, that’s not true! I am a dreamer but I am also a realist, and I thank you so much for being honest. I plan on spending these next years learning this as best as I can, and having fun in the process. I’ve seen that article linked in other forums and I think it’s a great article. I have both links bookmarked should I ever get discouraged :). Thank you so much for giving me this advice. It’s good to hear from those with experience what to expect, considering schools would be hard pressed to tell you.
Cool!
Glad I could help. I really havent had trouble as such, its kind of normal if you find making the best you can more important than business, but business is an inescapable part of the game.
