I edited some og my sketches to a smaller version so you can all see my process of thinking

#2

here are some more sketches before my final descision.
at this point I decided to just choose a pose, it was difficult because I think I could have done better and choose a better pose

#3

hi,
you need to click this button first , then paste the url into there, it will show your image with it’s actual size.

#4

so after choosing a pose I finally was able to come up with a rough sketch of what my character will look like.
HE is a Demon Prince brought forth by a legendery story from the MAyan world, his arms will carry the source of his powers, that feed his veins

Now I have to come up with an envorn ment and start sketching that out a lot of work ahead of me

#5

so my approach to 2d may be different, but usually I look and think about the pose and sketch around a lot.
been looking to Mayan culture and stories of creatures of Mayan civilization and I try to think about colors, I also put a twist once I know what I want. I do have a final sketch which I will be posting, just this morning I finally came up with an environment Idea.

Is it ok If I put a country on the nameplate of where the creature was shiped from? been that my grandparents are from that country is it ok.

and are the images IM posting to big?

Im begining to detail gim and at the same time IM debating if I should ink him then start coloring him in photoshop?
IM not a real good painter so IM afraid whats in for me, but I know I have to try. so
if anyone know what step I should take next? does inking help the image come out nicer? cause I don’t have problem inking, the painting is where I will have challenge. IM going to color him on Photoshop (thats what I mean by Painting)
alright anyone more experience can guide me in the right direction much appreacited

so Im still working a little on the detail and also Brainstorming on the background. I will be working on model sheets and concepts sheets this weekend. So I should be busy IM also doing some animation work for something else, but in anycase so far Ive been having fun with this contest. don’t anyone be shy if you have questions or can help me color code it or ideas for background I love critiques

Character is a Demon Prince
from Dominance War IV rules
Demon Prince - Demon Princess
Demon Princes are human sized demons with human-like or alien-like characteristics. If not for a few demon-like body traits (bat wings, horns, tail etc), they could easily pass for a natural intelligent human, alien, elf etc of that kind. Demon Princes, like Demon Lords, can manipulate their inborn fusion of power.

his fusion power is coming out of his forearms and into his veins which will light up and suck powers from living things

Hey Juan, pretty cool stuff here. I’m not sure how you’d feel about this at this point, but here’s my main critique. I like what you’ve got going on in your drawing here but I feel that this guy needs some more dominant features that stand out, making him less human-like. Right now, aside from slight variations in facial structure, the only difference between your demon and a man is that he has 3 fingers instead of four, fur around his ankles and some tiny horns. I feel like this stuff has been done before, and while its okay to echo things/designs that already exist, it’d be nice to have your own personal twist on it. I think you could really push this a lot further. Something that really stands out in the silhouette of the character. Maybe take some tracing paper and tape it to your drawing, and try drawing some new features over the top of this guy. Or scan and try sketching in PS with a wacom where you have the benefit of layers.

As far as finishing techniques, I’d say only ink out the line work if you are going for a more flat/graphic finish to your coloring. Line work can add a lot of dimension and solidity to a form if its handled right, and things with flat or gradient coloring generally benefit from this, but don’t always need it. There are some great artists that get away without the linework too. If you are going to try to make it look like a painting, I say skip the inking process, scan it, and paint that bad boy up in photoshop. Try painting him in black and white first to get your values down if you don’t feel very strong with color yet. But, again, there are artists who render like a painter and still include linework… there are always exceptions to the rule. I’d say for now, pick one standard or the other, and in the future try experimenting with mixing the techniques. Also, with the flat graphic stuff, you might consider doing your linework or shaping in a vector program such as Illustrator or Freehand for your final image to make it looks really slick.

Well, good luck man! Hope this helps. Keep chuggin along

That’s too bad man, but its okay. We learn anytime we sit down to do art, so atleast you’ve got some more work under your belt from this. Definately finish it at some point though. I’m a little worried if I’m going to be able to finish my stuff as well, but I’m going to give it my best shot here. It might not be to the level I want it but I’ll still hand something in. Cross your fingers for me, lol.
