DWIII - 3D - Pitts - The Call to Arms

Hey all-

After sitting around trying to think of an idea for this contest I finally decided on something I like. here’s the details.

Race: demon
class: Invoker (i think)
Arti: summon (sleeve)

I haven’t worked out all the back-story yet, but it goes something like this -

Long ago, a good king was forced to defend his people from a war class rival tribe. Knowing the fate of his people was not a good one, he made an arrangement with an out casted cleric to acquire an item that would guarantee his peoples safety. He was told that he could single handedly defeat the invading tribe, but at the end of the battle he too would fall. The good king was willing to accept this fate for his people and received the item.

Upon word that the invading tribe was on the warpath, the good king told his people to take shelter and to trust him that everything would be fine. He demanded that no one followed him to battle and for his scouts to wait 1 week before searching after him. The good king rode off with his newly acquired weapon in tow. Two boys, torn by curiosity secretly followed the king to the battle site, and watched the carnage ensue.

The following folklore, which originated from the only two witness of the legendary battle, has been passed down for hundreds of years:

Our king rode nearly within arrow shot of the aggressors before he dismounted from his steed and pulled a large object from a bag that he’d carried. He sent the horse away, and slipped his arm into a sleeve like object. The king fell to his knees in obvious pain - but he’d not been shot through. As we watched our enemy begin to swarm him something came from the sleeve. It was if serpents covered his body, constricting and writhing into formation. Our king stood - nearly 20 feet tall! …

more to come.

so the artifact is basically cursed - the wearer is wrapped in an armor of flesh and bone. dozens of hands and arms from the souls of the artifacts previous owners embrace the wearer and provide him or her with the strength of an army of men.

think along the lines jekyll and hyde or spiderman and venom. In this case the person wearing the sleeve becomes the host so the sleeve can summon it’s fleshy horrors.

here’s some really early blocking in of how I want the suit to work. the wearer is essentially wrapped in arms- feet suspended off the ground and left hand bound to the body. hands pull the head back so that the host is forced to view carnage of what is to come.

the sleeve itself is completely stub in at the moment- and the poses of the hands will obviously be refined.

the goal will be to create a suit of armor comprised of hands and arms. I’m going to try to mimic muscle groups and joints - similar to what’s going on in the feet.

lots to do…

update playing with shapes - relatively happy with the legs and feet

more doodles. not sold on the front silhouette, but feeling better about the sides

#5

Woah this is a pretty sick concept and by sick I mean cool :D. Cheers

#6

Pretty nice concept. I feel itchy all over just looking at it!

#7

thanks, Louker; stacyOgie

update on the back and face area. hope to finish up the base this evening and hit zbrush tonight… should be fun lots of claw marks, scars, tears and muscle. still need to come up with an idea for the sleeve…

oh man this is ****ing amazing. I dig these kind of designs. The spine part is my favourite, it just works so well!

#9

update with some sculpting…

not sure I’ve got enough free time to finish, fun anyway.

#10

wow, this is F*CKING AMAZING! great work and idea!

y’know, i think this is quite possibly one of the strangest things i’ve ever seen…:curious:

for the most part it’s looking pretty sweet, and i really love the way the arms form around the king, especially the feet and “spine”. just two minor crits i think, there’s a lot of intersecting geometry right now, and while i’m sure you’ve got a plan for dealing with it, it looks like fixing that will be the biggest task in the project.

secondly, while the design is awesome and all, is armour of flesh and bone really going to be all that usefull for fighting giant monsters made of fire and stone, or invading robots for that matter? maybe if they were stone arms, but as it is right now, i don’t see this guy lasting very long against, say, this guy.

he’s still awesome, i just don’t know if he’s all that effective…

WOW! This is a very very unique idea. I don’t think I have any words to say how amazing this is! I love the expressions.

I do however agree with ScudzAlmighty, It might not last much in the battlefield if its all flesh and bone. Parhaps make metalic or stone like hands? Or maybe even give some of the hands some armor like you did with with his right hand.

Hey all, thanks a bunch for the feedback! I’m glad some you are digging the concept, before I even started it some people at work were like ‘wtf do you mean a suit of hands?’ when I tried to verbally explain it.

As for its usefulness on the battlefield, looking at all the other fantastic entries I’m trying really hard to stay away from ‘conventional’ theme stuff (guys with huge swords, loads of armor, flames, stone etc…). Not that that stuff isn’t awesome, because it is - I just want my guy to be a little more unique.

The idea behind this guy is that he is not a finesse warrior or skilled assassin. He’s a collection of souls comprised of everyone who has ever had the misfortune to put the cursed artifact on - Kings, blacksmiths, farmers, children, whoever. On the battlefield the fighting style is simply rage and terror. If half of the arms get chopped off so be it, there is a good chance you’re in grasping range of what’s left. And if the host is killed in battle, all the better - one more soul added to the mix when the ‘Call to Arms’ is activated again.

Hopefully I’ll have more updates later today, I really want to sell the fact that the wearer is horrified of what’s become of him.

wow this is a great idea!!!

Less than a week left…

I’ll be cutting it close it I make it at all… here’s an update anyway.

I concepted this guy in 3D essentially with several different poses of arms and hands, so what I was left with when I was done was a mess of intersecting mesh and many subtools. I used the transposemaster to essentially collapse all my subtools and was left with a mesh that I could retopologize quickly. Kicked out the result from zbrush and reoptimized the final mesh in max. triangle count is at 8890. unwraped and ready for rip.

now to snag a case of redbull and get buck wild this weekend… :buttrock:

Very unique character, and nice execution with the model. The character reads well now as everything else is grey, but I look forward to seeing how you treat teh final texturing - will everything be the same flesh color? Also, you haven’t showed the important articact since your first post (and even then only in part.) What is it, and what kind of magic are you planning on using with it?
Good luck!

#18

rush job with the texture and still not complete yet… getting closer.

there’s quite a bit that I’m not happy with… only a handful of hours left and I can be rid of it

#19

I learned a ton from coming here and watching everyone develop their characters. Just want to say thanks to everyone and I can’t wait until the next one.

Thats a creepy design. Good job!
