Original post:

hi guys,

Here’s my rough concept for dw3. Hope you like it so far.

Its a pretty rough concept to start with but i think i’ll start modelling and develop the character as i go along.

I typed ‘tree demon’ into an online English to Latin Translator and it came up with his name ‘Nemus Everto’ which i think fits quite well.

He looks like he could be standing next to you in a mountain forest, and you’d never know.

#3

cool idea man! I want the birds nastier!

#4

Nice, you’ve got to render him half-camoflauged in a forest with birds sitting on his head

#5

That’s one evil son of a… Sweet!
It’s just a first sketch but… maybe develop the horns a bit more, making them less generic?
I’m also making a treelike character so I’m going to check this thread out.

Keep 'em coming. :buttrock:

#6

Cool concept! I got a tree going myself, I’m envious of your name though, why didn’t I think of that :).

#7

Looking good dude, interesting concept. He looks realy mean. Looking forward to seeing him 3d’d.

#8

I love the concept…the huuuge horns are awesome and I like the way the character is posed:thumbsup:

Hi guys,

Thanks very much for the comments.

I forgot to mention that he’s in the warlord category before.

I’ve created a rough sculpt of the body without the tree parts and armour which I’ll add later. I’ve also been playing around with the horn designs, not sure if I’m 100 percent satisfied with them yet but i keep coming back to these large wide ones as i like the silhouette they make.

hope you like him.

#10

Looking great, cool anatomy. Looking forward to all the gnarnliness . He is one badd ass warlord.

#11

I’ve roughed out a few of the other parts and continued experimenting with the horns, playing around with double sets and branches. Not too sure which one to go for at the moment so any help would be appreciated.

#12

i like the first one, mainly as i prefer the horns and stomach armour the most. Maybe try a few more radically differing ideas too, same guy, just more differing wood, veggie stuff, maybe some turf up there too, like the illustrations from that book called giants, can’t remeber who drew it, looks like alan lee and brian froud again but i dont think it is. Maybe just google up a lot of vegetation, swamps, bracken, moss, maybe his skin could be chameleon-like, like a reptile who camouflages himself in the forest. I do like one, just feel you may still be able to add a tad more.

#13

This is coming along realy nicely darren. It looks different to a lot of the other concepts on here.
I like the bottom right design the moset, the others look a bit too complicated and messy. Maybe try a mixture between that one and the top right one.

#14

Looks really good dude…I like the one on the top right the most:thumbsup:

#15

i like the one in the upper left. feels more incorporated with the tree idea. speaking of which, i love the treearm! it feels so powerful

#16

Thanks guys,

I was hoping there would be 1 design that everyone prefered but it seems to be a mix. I’m still at a bit of a loss as I’m pretty bad at making decisions like this when i have a few options. I’ll sit on it for a bit and work up the rest of the body. I quite like the idea of branches growing around the horns but i think maybe the second set of lower horns is overkill.

I’ve never actually mentioned the magical artefact and my plan is to have a magical seed that is sugically implanted into the demons left hand. The seed then grows from within the demon giving him strength and protection in the form of his mutated tree arm and back area. I’m not sure if i’ll get away with this or not as you can’t actually see the artefact as such, but then again i supose the artefact grows and therefore the artefact is actually the vegetation covering. what do you guys think? If this won’t work then maybe he can have an orb or something similar implanted into him that will be more visible.

Thanks for the comments on the arm Jeff. I actually decided to change it a bit today and roughly sculpted it with more of the arm anatomy influencing the form. I bent the fingers inwards and they’ve become more root like. I’ll spread the bark surface over his back and into his torso slightly adding more vegetation etc in those areas. I may make more of the vines hanging down like dreaded hair as i quite like this effect.

I’m off work for a few days so hopefully i’ll be able to update again soon. the laptop doesn’t handle the high poly counts too well so it might go a bit slowly. i’ll probably have to wait till i’m back in the office to get stuck into the sculpt.

I’m off out to buy myself a mouse now, this last sculpt was done on the laptops trackpad which isn’t the easiest to use. I should really get myself a wacom to use at home. anyway i’m blabbering on here. get back to your DW3 entries!

Wow, really cool character! I like the upper left one, its a much funnier idea when the horns looks like they are infested with the tree.

#18

Neat stuff so far! Of the last posts, I prefer the top renders better - for a vegetation guy, I really like the horms being tree-branches (or branch-like.) It’sd a fun idea that works visually. Without the horns, it’s just dreadlocks, and the simple horns just aren’t as creative as the top idea. Good luck with the remainder!

#19

I agree with walrus the branch horns suits your character and the others are too simple.
Great character by the way.
I had this Idea ,perhaps you may want to to put an animal or creature living inside of a horn it could be like his pet or just a fool animal that thought it was just a tree .

#20

gyorkland: nice idea, I was thinking along similar lines myself. In my original concept i had a dodo and a vulture nesting in the branches. Not sure i’ll have enough polys left with all these branches and vines tho’. I’m going to retopologise when the sculpt is finish so i’ll see how I get on. I’m sure i’ll be able to squeeze something in.
