DWIII - 2D - Hideyoshi - Yamiten 闇天

Oh Boy! The samurai freaks me out! Very nice! Go on! Buuut… Dunno about the darknes/psyche thing. Once the mai enemy is a army of MACHINES… Not really shure about the level of consience of those things, would’t risk this awesome character with a maybe inefective weapon…

#22

Hellö!
Some very nice stuff in here for sure, like your style… I like the samurai touch on your latest, my character is also inspired by asian culture. I think it would give him much more character showing his eyes. I know its a bit mystical and scary with them covered but i still imagine some not very scary eyes behind that cover becouse of the look on his face. Maybe show a hint of his eyes in a very dark shadow of the cover if you elevate it some, or put a more harsh look on his face or even take the cover away. Very nice stuff still… Keep it up!

Really cool stuff

go man, we have a war to win

Perin: ooh, good point! I missed out on that! They’re fighting against machines, right!
I guess I was wrong when I thought I had a cool artifact concept :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
Well, I will think of something else, hopefully not too generic… Thanks a lot!

FrozZT: thanks a bunch for your crits as well! Hm…I see your point, but I like to have his eyes conceiled I think. It lends an air of mystery to the character like you said. Well, I could try and see what it looks like having the cover removed or translucent etc.
Heck, I was even considering giving him a completely different head, something alien and freaky! Or go the demonic route and totally drop the head, so he only has a floating helmet
I’ll see about that! Really appreciate your thoughts!

Toledo: let’s kick some arse!!

#25

Awesome samurai. I agree his weapon needs an upgrade -right now looking more like weak stick good for self defence from an average size dog attack rather than fighting with deamons  Excellent sketches anyway.

#26

No no, still a great artifact concept, just make it short-circuit their CPU and he’s be the biggest metal ass kicker  Excellent character btw, can’t wait to see him rendered!

#27

You have a lovely lively line quality, really free and fluid. Some interesting ideas shaping up.

#28

mime1: thank you for the feedback! I am considering everything you guys say!

Laurentiu: same here, thanks man! That’s an interesting idea! I’ll see what I am gonna run with in the end. Either way I wanna somehow use a ‘darkness’ artifact…

Robert: thank you very much, I really do appreciate what you said there! I can give the compliment right back at you!

here is an update, another instance with some design tweaks if you will. This time it’s a digital color sketch, playing with more dynamic/bigger shapes for the artifact - as you can see I am still clueless concerning that…
I think I like the loose armour skirt thing better than the full-enclosed one, what do you think?

#29

great sketches so far. your recent color sketches have a lot of power and presence in them although i feel the guy on the right in previous b/w sketch still has a more commanding presence. the loose armor thing is more effective as well. I cant wait to see what artifact you create for this guy

#30

Awesome update man! Love his armor design:thumbsup:

#31

oohhh i love your samurai! it’s so badass and sleek! you got some amazing works!
can’t wait to see your final stuffs!

#32

Nice work!

I would give him a very characteristic artifact. That a big glove won’t make him stand out enough. Your artifact is going to be your shape defining thing here I guess. Do something cool weird and different, maybe something completely unrelated to samurais? To increase the contrast. Just a thought though
Keep it up!

#33

Thanks a bunch, balasa, rawwad, gough, DavidSmit!!

Balasa: yeah, I agree! For the final illustration I will prolly go for a stronger build for him again!
David: thx for the thoughts! I completely agree with you - I think going for some traditional Samurai wouldn’t be that interesting, so I thought of something else now…

What about a coffin that holds the darkness inside, unleashing it upon the foes in battle?
Laurentiu also made a good remark about making the dark fog short-circuit the machines - I think that’s a cool idea!

I should definitely settle on something soon, or I will not make it to a finish… O_O

Anyway, here are some sketches, definitely rather lame on a design standpoint.
I also really wanna have him have an additional weapon like a sword or a japanese bow beside the artifact weapon. I hope that’s along the rules… (?)

#34

really nice paintings and some cool concepts

#35

Wow, I think the coffin idea is great! and original too. One think though… I didnt know it was a coffin until you mentioned it, probably it because of the color? It could be just me  .
Anyway… cooooll character concept from the beginning to this stage.

#36

Cheers for the comments. I wish my stuff was asfluid as yours though, you have a really nice loose quality to your line.

#37

Thanks, Robert, Wilson!

Getting more serious now, here is a sketch for the final illustration. I had intended to go for more action, but I quite like the composition with this one, so I might go with it. Not much time left anyway…

I’ll change the color scheme drifting more towards blues and blacks and dots of red (like the logo).

Also, finally found my character’s name!
Yamiten: ‘yami’=dark, ‘ten’=heaven

He is turning the sky black with the dark mist from his coffin! Cool, eh?
I guess he runs as an Invoker now. Too much magic involved for being a warlord I guess…

#38

amazing development so far. can’t wait to see the final illustration. Checked out your other finished work on your website and it’s really strong…great color, etc. I’ve got high expectations for this one.

#39

hurrying towards the finishing line now!

here is a color update, some more detailling also. Need to fix arm anatomy…
still a lot to do

Looking nice, Hideyoshi! The muted palette is nice, and I like how the smoke from the coffin is so heavy that it’s obscuring the sky. You haven’t established a strong light source yet, but it could be kind of cool if his head and left shoulder were in shadows from all the smoke billowing around the sky. it’s okay if you obscure the character a bit for mood: You’ll still get to show his details in the other two sheets. Or at least I think it would be okay!

Oh, and you might want to consider making his head a bit bigger in the color painting to fit the body. In your earlier concepts, he’s 7 heads tall, but here his head is so small that he’s a full 8 heads tall.

Good luck with the rest!
