Dropping Layers

Hi,
A quick, and probably dumb, question. How can I drop one layer down directly to the layer below it?

Say I have 5 layers with 1 being the background, then layer two, three, four and finally five being the top one. How can I drop layer five onto layer four?

If I highlight layer five and select “drop” in the layers menu it drops it onto the background, bypassing layers 4, 3 and 2.

If I select “Drop and Select” it drops it onto the background and selects the items on that layer.

How do I just drop a layer to the next layer below it (not the background).

If I understand your question correctly you will want to collapse the layer. This will combine layers together without dropping them all the way down to the background. Look on bottom left corner of layers pallet for a button click it and you should see collapse layers option and I’m sure its probably in the layers menu also, but I always just use the shortcut.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I checked it out and, while it works, it requires “grouping” the layer you want to drop with the layer you want to drop it onto, then collapsing them.
I’m so spoiled by Photoshop’s “ctrl + E” feature for simply dropping a layer onto the layer below it that I’d hoped Painter had a similar feature.
I’m surprised such a simple, and useful, task requires so many steps in Painter. Oh well.

Another quick question is you don’t mind.

Whenever I start Painter and either start a new project or open an existing image, the paper for the image is “leaves”.
I have no idea why that became the default paper. I don’t remember selecting it.
It’s particularly annoying because I’ll change it for an image I’m working on, close Painter, and when I open Painter again “leaves” is the paper again.

How can I change the default paper permanently to something more conducive to an initial sketch such as “Basic Paper”.
I’m using Painter V9.5.

Select a layer; Shift click to select the other, then press Shift/Ctrl/X (or Collapse from the Layer flyout).

Yes I guess I forgot to mention you need to highlight the cells you want to merge in order to make the collapse function work properly.

Hmm, the “Shift/Ctrl/X (or Collapse from the Layer flyout)” isn’t working for me.
I tried the “Select a layer; Shift click to select the other”, then when I hit “Shift/Ctrl/X” nothing happens. I still have to “Group” the layers, then and only then, does the “Collapse” option become available.
Possibly it’s the version of Painter I’m using (V9.5).

i’m using version X /10 …
first i selected the two/three layers that i wanted to combine or merge , by holding shift key and clicking on the two or three layers that u want to merge.

then press" ctrl +shift key + x "

it worked like a charm.

Only in Painter X and Painter X.1 can we bypass the Group command and go straight to the Collapse command after holding down the Shift key and highlighting the Layers we want to collapse to a single Layer.
