Drawing halftones in pencil

#1

Is this possible? Is there some kind of masking tool that will allow for drawing in halftones in graphite and/or charcoal?

What’s your reason for wanting to do that? Why not just use screentones, which is what people normally do? Or just do it digitally, which is even easier?

I personally have never heard of something that allows you to mimic half-tone with pencil or charcoal, and I’ve been a professional artist for many years before I even turned digital and worked in all sorts of mixed media.

The screen tones are interesting. But from what I can see in the videos about using them, the dots are difficult to see. I guess I’m looking more for the Roy Lichtenstein pop art style.

That is incorrect. Screentones are very clear and print extremely well during reproductions–that is why manga artists used them for decades before digital became popular. I used screentones extensively in my comic book days, and never had a single problem with clarity. There are different patterns and different sizes and density of dots, so you can find just about anything you need.

Again, why not just use digital? It’ll be far more flexible and convenient.

Oh I’m not against using digital. In fact its what I’m going to school for. But I’m curious to try new traditional styles and see how I can use and manipulate them in creating works.
