Draugr King

#1

Inspired by the ring wraiths and white Walkers I thought i’d do my own take on theme.

The idea is to make something that looks just between living and dead, but with a sense of nobility. Like an old slain king that refused to stay dead, and now haunts the living…

I’m hoping to pull it off with some subtlety as well, mainly through features and posture.

Anyhow, thought i’d post my work in progress in the hopes of getting some constructive feedback as I go along.

I haven’t gotten that far yet, but here’s what I have so far:

First, a very rough concept. I’ll be doing more of those to quickly rough out different compositions.

Here i’ve started with a base bust and roughed in the major features:

Some more work. I’m not trying to jump into detailing here but breaking up the surface and drawing in lines to get a sense of the flow. I know the ear looks like dog poop btw

Lastly, a render in 3/4 view. Because I like to play with Keyshot

Next up:

Fixing the ear
Adding Eyes
Refining lips and nose
Adding teeth

Small update:

Really good start. What’s your plan for the clothing?

Thanks!
I don’t have a final plan yet, but i’m thinking of keeping it fairly simple with tattered robes and a Crown. I’ll do some research on norse clothing and jewelry to see what I can find.

Latest update. Added a body (base mesh from Poser to save some time) and started on some clothing. The idea is to place a sword across his legs. The arms will have to come down a bit further but i’m keeping them there for now to have them out of the way.

As for clothing I Think i’ll have to ditch Zbrush and make some base meshes in Maya. Shaping things with the move brush is frustrating when you want finer control.

Also doodled a bit in Photoshop, as you can see, to try out a rough composition.

I haven’t really made any progress. Been trying some different approaches to dressing the guy in some robes, but it seems I need to get out of the valley of suck…

Meanwhile, I had some fun with textured brushes in Photoshop and sort of accidentally happened upon a concept:

Kind of reminds me of Testament’s “Souls of Black” album cover, which has become a favorite album of mine so I support all things in it’s vein.

Hehe, I better check that out!
