Does anyone know this effect from "Love is Lost" D. Bowie Video?

#1

I’ve seen this effect before… but for the life of me i can’t figure out which effect it is?

Could someone point out which effect this is or how I should go about replicating it? It’s from the David Bowie video “Love is Lost”…

It happens at the 6:00min mark and happens throughout the video where the effect seems to ‘stretch’ off screen. I placed a link to the actual time frame from the video below:

//youtu.be/VpXleysIs90?t=6m

And also at 6:32min mark how or what effect/ technique was done to get this effect of the way the video breaks/ pauses then plays/merges into each other.

Here is a direct link to the effect I’m talking about:

//youtu.be/VpXleysIs90?t=6m32s

Any help or simply pointing me in the right direction would be of major assistance.

Thanks guys:)

I have seen this effect before, Fox Sports used it for a while. To my knowledge it is called pixel stretching, because the streaks or “stretched area” is actually just a repeat of the last amount of pixels. So what you could do is take a one pixel sliver of your image and use the Effect> Stylize > CC Repetile. Then just adjust the slider on whatever value you need, whether it would be to the right, left, top or bottom.

Does that help at all? Let me know how it goes or if you need anything else on this technique. I haven’t tried finding a way to animate the effect yet. I have a couple ideas though.

Thank’s for the detailed response.

I actually was also able to create the ‘pixel stretch’ effect by duplicating the layer… Then masking out the area I want to stretch then add a motion blur to the bottom later set to max or whatever is required and - it worked perfectly.

But… I would like to attempt to try and use your advice > I think it might be a little better.

  • what really interests me is how the hell they did the effects sequence from 6:27 - 6:50. It looks like the digital pixelation is slipping slowly/ sliding down (or whatever direction its going in) That looks cool with the slight blockyness to some edges as what seems is another layer of video below makes its way through.

  • There was some pretty cool 3D work done in this. Amazing how subtle it is.

I hope to hear your thoughts:)

Thanks again. :buttrock:

You should post up an image of the result you got. I might actually record a little tutorial based on this discussion but I need to do some experimenting around with animating with it. Looking forward to trying some of this out.
