DJ Nicke Character Animation Reel

#1

NOW ON YOU TUBE

Here’s my new showreel. I’ve been animating for about 10 years now, but this is my first reel since 2001. I’d love to hear some feedback. What you like, what you hate, what you think I should cut out etc. It’s a 32mb Mpeg-4 Quicktime.

WoW … what a greet reel …
man, i didn’t found more than 5 *, but you deserve more than that …
the animation is awesome, and i wanna ask you about the characaters models, specially the disney models … did you made it specially the disney models ?

this thread must be PLUGED !!!

Hey Yusuf.

The only model I made on that reel was Pluto in the first clip. That was modeled and rigged in Maya. Also the alien clips and the woman was done in Maya.

The rest of the stuff was made in 3DS Max, mostly rigged with character studio actually. The models were standard smoothed poly meshes rendered with the standard Max scanline renderer. They were all done by a fantastic company in Brisbane, Australia called Liquid Animation. I don’t actually have ANY of the animation I did while I was at Disney. Funny that…

nice stuff,.
i think you have some of cool animation there.
like most of animation with disney character were nicely done. I would actually put it in the front rather than the walkcycle…
the animation with chicken little were really cool …
but the one with goofy doesn’t look done for me
i think my fav ones it when chicken little tried to straighten up blanket

cool stuff

I wish I could be brutal in a critique but I cant find anything. If anything when first seeing it when stitch was twirling the fire baton it played tricks with my eyes a little, it looks like he has a second right arm sometimes. Uhm, mostly when I watched it I forgot I was watching a reel and was just enjoing it. Then I had to rewind it to watch it again.

Maybe somoene with more experience can critique it better, I was just enjoying it too much. Especially the Chicken Little peices. Im in the process of putting my web page up so I can put some of my animations up, would very much enjoy some feedback from you. Keep an eye out.

Hey DJ :wavey:

Awesome reel man. Really love the chicken little stuff. And thought there was some really nice animation on the generic rig doing that strut walk cycle.

I’m going to be brutal coz i know you can take it.
Ditch the Goofy and whinne the poo stuff. The animation is perfectly fine, but there isn’t really much going on there. And you want everthing on your reel to be kick ass. Also the aliens have a bit of a amateurish look to it. Again, it perfectly fine animation but not awesome.

#7

Nice stuff. Just felt the animation was a bit snappy at times. Especially the part where chicken little takes out the honey. Could use a bit of loosening up

Other than that…well done!

Ok, I’ve cut all the alien stuff and the winnie the pooh (& tigger too!) along with the Aristocats playing their instruments.

I had a look at the popping the honey scene, and it looks like a few frames are missing, as well as a lack of motion blur. I wasn’t able to follow these shots through to final, so I’ll look into this and try to get the original files.

Thanks for the crits every1! Please keep them coming. I’ve already chopped 30+ seconds off!

24mb Sorenson 3 Quicktime…

alright man, i really shouldn’t be here giving you critics since you taught me mostly everything i know but as for the presentation of your reel, i think you may leave all the walk cycles aside, you know becasue, those shots with chicken little definitly shows you know how to run so you dont need to make a point that you also know how to crawl, you know?

now you probably did that to get some contrast in your reel, understandable, but you have enough stuff to do that, use chicken little, stitch and tinkerbell and edit them together, also i’d ditch the “strong point” shot, it is nicely animated yes but then comparing to your other stuff its weak, and also the micheal jackson dance, again too weak comparing to the rest.

and one more minor point, i didn’t really like the music, now that’s a matter of taste im sure but maybe you’d want to consider putting a not-so-strong music.

and as for giving you crits for your animations, i dont think i’ve reached that point yet

all the best,

Michael

DJ Nicke…I’m getting a 404 on your links,you may need a mirror

Stefan: 404? Maybe try it again after a few minutes? I don’t have another server, but if anyone could offer a mirror I’d appreciate it.

Maninflash: How are you man!? Dude you’re a talented guy with a good eye, so don’t doubt your own abilities! I respect your work, but that’s beside the point; Anyone is qualified to critique animation. It’s a lot like stand-up comedy in that regard.

You know what’s frustrating about the Chicken Little stuff? It was all animated with 20 seconds per week deadlines! It was all rushed and I haven’t gone back to polish it. And the Tinkerbell and Stitch stuff was done at 30 seconds per week. But that’s the only animation work I still have besides those run cycles and the Pluto cycle. In fact, that entire reel (besides the cycles) is stuff I’ve done in the last 4 months. So it just seems a little odd using only that stuff. But if its the best I have…

A few people in CG-Char have suggested I need some dialogue and straight acting pieces. Thankfully I’m doing those in my current contract job. And this project is only roughly 15 seconds per week, so it will hopefully be much higher quality.

I do fear that I’ll get pidgeon holed into exaggerated snappy animation though. I actually prefer the subtle emotional scenes. Thanks to my personality, though, I always get the extreme scenes. Such is life! Please keep the crits coming! A few more ppl asking me to remove the cycles and the “Strong Point” and they’re gawnsky!

this is what I get, hopefully someone can get a mirror for you:
Bandwidth Limit Exceeded

The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit. Please try again later.

#13

Dangit Deej, good to finally see your stuff out there. If there’s a weak part I’d take out it would be the Jackson dance but I thought it overall looked great.
If you can get some more bandwidth I’ll be happy to plug it.

Nicely done Dj.
love it all, love the chicken little stuff, specialy when he’s trying to set up the chair.

Cya at work tomoz

#16

Could have dropped the name of the modeler that put all that hard work into those chicken little characters.

Should put some of that Limbo Auction stuff we worked on, on there. Even just a small part. Like the Host when he first snaps into screen. Just to break up some of the chicken little stuff.

#17

How rude of me. Let me introduce to you the very talented Robert Brady! Modeler & Rigger extraordinaire! How’s things back in Brisbane?

Yeah, I just forgot to get a copy of that before I left. I’ll have to make some phone calls. I’m terrible when it comes to reels, I always forget that I even animated some things. Thanks for reminding me, that Limbo Auctions was some killer stuff!

Incidentally, I’ve re-edited my reel again. Changed the music and re-ordered everything as per suggestions on the list:

There is a double D in braddy thank you very much. All is well here in brisbane. Its a bit quieter in the office now you are gone.

Its good to see people like the disney work we do here.

#20

That’s funny, its still loud wherever I go…

Yeah, very encouraging. Be sure to tell Dave and the guys: Well done! Oh, could you help me get a copy of that Limbo stuff? I’d love to put that on my reel.

Man, my server keeps getting knocked over, and I’m upping the bandwidth by 10gb increments. That means it had roughly 416 hits yesterday alone! I underestimated you guys. I’ll see if I can crank the bandwidth right up.
