Disregard Maya's shading on bad normals?

#1

Hi,

I have this high poly mesh from zbrush that has been decimated/polygon reduction. Imported into Maya for retopo.
However, all I get is this black/white shading.

I reckon this has something to with the normals because of the decimated mesh. However, it is hard to retopo with that view.
I already tried soft, hard normals. Conform the normals. Attach different textures but I still get the same shading.

Is there a way around it?

First u need to unlock the normals, then set a new normal angle… u are almost there

Thanks damaggio! It worked.
Never knew there is such a thing with lock and unlock normals. Is that common for things imported outside from Maya?

yes that can happen sometimes if you export the model from another app with Normals off, for instance from Maya the OBJ and FBX have export normals option to be checked.
You could try to export from Zbrush again and see if you forgot the normals option from there…sorry dont use Zbrush.
